2025 Plastic Surgeons Meetings and Other Fun!

14 August Plastic Surgeon meeting post;

After another 10 days of monsoon season during the wettest August I can recall, I finally got a sunny day to attend to harvesting the yard.
The deck belt tensioner on our 11-year-old "yard harvester" let go yesterday, mid-chore. Dissasembly ensued and I considered ways to solve this new chance for growth. I inherited the little 120V wire welder from my Dad, God rest him. Choosing the proper wire feed setting took a little practice. I did grind the surfaces, and got closer to the work, so I could see it through the helmet a little better. I also tacked a big-ass washer to the underside of the deck, because I had one on hand. I offer no excuses for my lack of experience. This was my first attempt at any kind of welding repair. I won't show you the welds, they are NOT pretty. I don't like to lose.

Tree trimming, brush cutting and burning, and finishing the mowing on a rare, rain-free day, A "Ranch Hand" mission against pig leaf and thistles also ensued. A fine, manly afternoon! Country livin' ain't fer pussies.
Having the following song on while repairing a mower deck seemed unwise, but whaddyagonna do?

By the time repairs had been made, and a satisfying amount of Elephant grass had been mercilessly chopped down, It was too late to attend the club meeting this night. Soooo....................

Two contributors this time. Greg Metge sent pictures of his completed Bronco 1/35 "Diana" from his Florida home, and Francisco Melendez provides pictures and captions from last Thursday's gathering of Hobby Hahnyaaks.

Greg gets to go first! He live the farthest away.

Deutches Afrika Korps 7.62cm FK36(r)auf PzJgr Selbstfahrlafette Zugkraftwagen 5t Diana (Sd.Kfz 6/3) (There's a $25.00 Moniker!)

(In my best Edward Fox) For the uneducated among you, I shall translate.
German Afrika Corps self-propelled (captured Soviet) 76.mm F.K. 36(r) cannon on the prime mover 5t halftrack chassis, named for Diana, the huntress.

This last picture is the real thing. 9 of these vehicles were modified for anti-tank use by the German army in North Afrika.
In spite of Bronco's reputation for having overly complex kits with lots of delicate parts, Greg says his Diana model didn't cause him much undue anguish. His results are impossible to dispute.

In local Club news, Jon Bond has built the Tamiya 1/48 French Devotine D.520 in 1940 Armee' de la Aire markings. Jon says the kit was a present, as he is not overfond of WW II French subjects and that this is his first and only French fighter. This D.520 build surprised me very much coming from Mister Bond. Francisco's helpful narrative resolved all doubt.

Rather going backwards in the Bundeswehr timeline, Joachim Lotz works on a Meng 1/35 scale Leopard 1A5. In his youth, German army soldiers used to exercise their Leopard tanks in and near Joachim's Hannover yard. I understand his connection to these vehicles.

Nate Stevens is making some headway on his Heller 1/72 AR-196 DKM floatplane and a Hasegawa 1/72 scale Brewster F2A Buffalo in what might be a Battle of Midway USMC scheme has entered his model prevue.

Jose' Gonzales is building a Revell 1/720 USS Alabama Battleship kit. Now, before you poo-poo the 1969 old tool, inaccurate, odd-scale Revell Battleship model, let us remind ourselves WHY Jose' builds model kits. He builds simply for the enjoyment of the hobby.
With this in mind, Jose' chooses what to build and seems to prefer vintage, less complex kits. Are they perfectly constructed contest, finished, weathered, award winning models? Well, that is for contest judges to decide.
I think Jose' may enjoy his model-making more than most of us do.

I had planned to bring these works to talk about, but chores have to come before play, I suppose.

In other news about Plastic Surgeons in absentia:

George Stevens is bearing up as best he can following his Clarlee's recent trip Up to Heaven. He has the support of friends and family in his Thornton, CO home. He tells me he misses his sweetheart very much, as one might expect, and he got a tattoo. If he got "Welcome Aboard" applied in a private spot, I won't need to see such a thing. :wow:

Ol' Kevin Nelson still hasn't departed for the High Country. Newest info says the sale of the Nelson home closes on Monday, and he'll be headed West to seek his fortune after that. Quite the adventure for our old friend.

We planned to attend Mark's NNL event in Grimes this weekend, but an emergency has arisen in Marion and I am obligated to go and apply my skills and talents to do what we can to help. Linkie!

Hey! Thanks for looking in again!
Happy Model-making!
(Is there any other kind?) :yipee:

I took a class in welding in college. Did OK with it. Still remember a fair bit on it. Had a bit better knack for it than some of the others. Wouldn't want to do it full time. Been thinking about picking up one of the better welders from Harbor Freight just to have around. Had a dinky stick welder at one time that disappeared from my storage building. Whoever ended up with it can have it.
