USS Bonhomme Richard's paint begins. Vallejo sprays pretty nicely if a drop of Windex is added to the cup. I mixed more than I needed, so I painted 3 other decks.
Notice how fine the planking is on Henry Turner's print from his STL file. This is a really nice model. The holes for the masts are oversized for scale masts. Altering the file is impossible. Altering the model? That's a whole nuther issue. Beware the fine 3D printed railings.
John Paul Jone's vessel was finished in a deep wood brown stain and trimmed in red. Praise the Lord! NO white hull line to mask and paint!
Painting this plastic (?) material is a JOY! It is slightly porous with no layer texture. No primer is required. No curing in the sunshine on the window sill either.
These cost $40.00 each plus shipping.
Shapeway's 3D print of Henry Turner's 1/700 HMS Surprise. The details are as fine as a Man could ask, but the chunky deck planking is obviously NOT intended for the scale model ship Geek! Big mast holes for 3D printed masts & sails allow a gaming Vessel to join the action without too much fuss. The double wheeled helm on the quarter deck is impressive! $17.00 plus shipping gets one of your very own!

More on Jack Aubrey's Movie ship, if you feel inclined. You've also seen this ship in "On Stranger Tides" as Commodore Hector Barbosa's command, HMS Providence.
Shapeway's 3D HMS Bounty. Her replica was built 1960 by the same Yard in Lunenburg, NS that brought us Bluenose II and HMS Surprise.
Henry Turner's 1/700 design again! Smaller mast stepping holes but he same 4 foot wide planking. The HMS Bounty replica was lost in a hurricane Sandy, off Cape Hatteras in 2014. US Coast Guard helicopters rescued her crew from lifeboats. (Diorama possibility?!?!) Fletcher Christian was not found among the survivors. You can get this same "two-fer" for $13.00 plus shipping.
"GEEZO! Get to the point, Rhino!! Serial Poster!"
In a minute. I am plumb full of Ship!
You get what you pay for. All these waterline gems are made in America. I'm a little biased towards Dr. Cerna, his skill and his diligence. The print quality speaks for itself. I will ABSOLUTELY support other American model makers! Care must be taken to sunshine cure the Shapeway's models, wash them and coat them in acrylic clear before finishing. Prepping these is a pain in the ass.
BONUS! Henry Turner's 1/700 Mediterranean Felucca. The STL file was free and makes 2 boats. One is armed with 2 cute little 4-pound cannon, the other is an unarmed "Pick-up Truck of the Nile". Lateen rigged D'hows and Felucca boats once plied the waters of The Eastern Med' in great numbers, comparable to the Junks of the South China Sea not so very long ago. If you visit Egypt, you can still hire an authentic Felucca for Nile River cruise at Luxor. Do not expect your passage to be very swift or air-conditioned.
This covers the 3D printed ship tutorial for today. There will be no final examination. Anyone enduring this entire post is already a Graduate!
