What I know about 3D printing I learned from James, here on M/A.
I found some Movie hero ships on Shapeways and bought a couple, for the fun of it.
Shapeways couldn't print John Paul Jones' very complex 1/700 USS Bonhomme Richard.
Enter our son-in-law, Professor Christopher Cerna, of Cerna 3D Solutions in Crosby, Texas.
I bought the STL files, so Cerna 3D could work on them. He thought he could build enough supports to make the model.

It takes 18-hours to "print" this vessel. The initial results look very promising. The first coat of paint will tell the tale once they arrive.
Stay tuned as more "Fast ships going in Harm's way" news unfolds!!

USS Bonhomme Richard made Port yesterday. She scales out at exactly 1/700 scale. The solid 3D print material has a slightly ceramic feel too it. Deck planking detail is pleasingly fine, if a bit overscale. I was so excited to receive this ship model, I promptly snapped two of the fine railings off the starboard side. :smack:

The battle sails are for a Royal Navy 5th rate (38 gun) Frigate. Bonnie Dick, at 44 guns should be reasonably close to the same sail plan. :bm:
The sails have no details of the backsides, but the dainty railings for the fighting tops are there! It seems to me the sails are "Gamer Thickness" rather than "Modeler Thickness". In the fullness of time, I imagine I'll make my own finer masts, yardarms and sails for my Fast Ship Going in Harm's way.
"Sir! I have not yet begun to MODEL!":dance:
Thanks again for looking in!

It's FUNKING AMAZING! I ordered another Bonhomme Richard hull and a 2 1/700 Feluccas. One with guns, one without.
A Felucca is a lateen-rigged wooden sailing vessel common to Mediterranean (Pirates!) seafarers. You can travel down the Egyptian Nile aboard one. By all accounts, this expensive boat ride makes it sound like Piracy is alive and well in Egypt!

My hat is off to Capt. Henry Turner and his intricate, stunning designs and Cerna 3D Solutions for the tenacity to add all the supports that make the 3D print possible! 1/700 USS Bonhomme Richard is a little pricey.
Shapeways had this model listed at $18.00, but it's "too complex" for their facility to make. :bat Pussies!!
Professor Cerna produces these for $37.00 without the irritating layers of Shapeways 3D prints. :dude:

Cerna must have at least a 4k printer, though it sounds like he might be printing these little beauties on one of the newer 8k printers. Maybe later this year I might go for one of those (8k printer) depending on how my cash funds are working out.

Next up, Captain Turner's free 1/700 Felucca design! No, that does not mean the 3D prints come at no charge.

This is what my 3rd USS Bonhomme Richard and Felucca sailboat prints look like.

Dr. Cerna's wife works at a game/comic book store. They also make terrain features and buildings for table-top gaming.
Imagine a Panther or Maus rumbling past the cathedral!
Thanks again for looking in!

Sweet! I love the print, it's very sharp and clean. Love the building too. Someday I hope to get more of them in 1/72 scale.

Or is it?....... :hmm:

Might be part of the lost city of Atlantis...
Right! USS Nautilus, cruising through the gate?:lol:
If you want one, I will ask Dr. Cerna! It isn't possible to buy directly from the la-bor-a-tory, but I'm happy to handle the transaction for you.
Maybe the Alter Ego facehole page would work as well?

USS Bonhomme Richard's paint begins. Vallejo sprays pretty nicely if a drop of Windex is added to the cup. I mixed more than I needed, so I painted 3 other decks.

Notice how fine the planking is on Henry Turner's print from his STL file. This is a really nice model. The holes for the masts are oversized for scale masts. Altering the file is impossible. Altering the model? That's a whole nuther issue. Beware the fine 3D printed railings.
John Paul Jone's vessel was finished in a deep wood brown stain and trimmed in red. Praise the Lord! NO white hull line to mask and paint!
Painting this plastic (?) material is a JOY! It is slightly porous with no layer texture. No primer is required. No curing in the sunshine on the window sill either.
These cost $40.00 each plus shipping.

Shapeway's 3D print of Henry Turner's 1/700 HMS Surprise. The details are as fine as a Man could ask, but the chunky deck planking is obviously NOT intended for the scale model ship Geek! Big mast holes for 3D printed masts & sails allow a gaming Vessel to join the action without too much fuss. The double wheeled helm on the quarter deck is impressive! $17.00 plus shipping gets one of your very own!
More on Jack Aubrey's Movie ship, if you feel inclined. You've also seen this ship in "On Stranger Tides" as Commodore Hector Barbosa's command, HMS Providence.

Shapeway's 3D HMS Bounty. Her replica was built 1960 by the same Yard in Lunenburg, NS that brought us Bluenose II and HMS Surprise.
Henry Turner's 1/700 design again! Smaller mast stepping holes but he same 4 foot wide planking. The HMS Bounty replica was lost in a hurricane Sandy, off Cape Hatteras in 2014. US Coast Guard helicopters rescued her crew from lifeboats. (Diorama possibility?!?!) Fletcher Christian was not found among the survivors. You can get this same "two-fer" for $13.00 plus shipping.

"GEEZO! Get to the point, Rhino!! Serial Poster!"
In a minute. I am plumb full of Ship!

You get what you pay for. All these waterline gems are made in America. I'm a little biased towards Dr. Cerna, his skill and his diligence. The print quality speaks for itself. I will ABSOLUTELY support other American model makers! Care must be taken to sunshine cure the Shapeway's models, wash them and coat them in acrylic clear before finishing. Prepping these is a pain in the ass.

BONUS! Henry Turner's 1/700 Mediterranean Felucca. The STL file was free and makes 2 boats. One is armed with 2 cute little 4-pound cannon, the other is an unarmed "Pick-up Truck of the Nile". Lateen rigged D'hows and Felucca boats once plied the waters of The Eastern Med' in great numbers, comparable to the Junks of the South China Sea not so very long ago. If you visit Egypt, you can still hire an authentic Felucca for Nile River cruise at Luxor. Do not expect your passage to be very swift or air-conditioned.

This covers the 3D printed ship tutorial for today. There will be no final examination. Anyone enduring this entire post is already a Graduate!:Drinks:

Professor Cerna said Bonhomme Richard could be painted without primer. ol' Poor Richard was a French vessel before JPJ took command and renamed her. It seems Chris knows his product! She sure looks forlorn without any tree pole trunks, sky leaf branches or blankie bed cloth breeze squeezers. Oh! I forgot I wasn't translating for Trumpeter again. Oops.

If I opened 2 Google Doc's tabs, it might be fun to rewrite TLAR instructions for the, shall we say "Asian" marketplace? Turn the pictures upside down? Other Yankee Plick model mischief?
