1/32 Scale Lindberg Pt Boat Rebuild - R.C.

PT Boat Rebuild = 1/32 scale Lindberg Kit #2

So basically whatever is hanging off the top somewhere has better be pretty secure.

Crikey but I hate it when I compose a post, add images to it, preview it, click Submit and then the post disappears. :<(

Probably because your session timed out before you finished your post. I always copy my text on long post just in case.

SEA TRIAL.

Ahoy there friends.

Here is a 53 seconds video clip my friend took of the boat on the weekend at the second pond.

The boat is running on just the center motor a Graupner 400 SPEED 7.2 volts with an ONYX NiMH 5000 MaHr battery.

The starboard torpedo tube was off for repairs.

Ahoy there me hearties!

I've been doing some figuring and sketching and then rebuilding the 20mm Oerlikon cannon for the rear deck.

Once the PT boats reached the war zone that gun shield on the 20mm Oerlikon was quickly removed. I've read recently that the shield weighed 250 pounds.

I wanted the 20mm Oerlikon cznnon to look a bit better than the kit supplied one. Thus I modified the kit gun and added a few things.

First, I removed the kit barrel and added an aluminium tube for the barrel. I also replace the broken shoulder cradles.

Second, I made a new pedastal mount. I was able to salvage the kit base plate (the original mount got run over be a car) The pedastal itself is a part of a tip of silicone sealant. I just cut out a section that looked good. The yellow dome-like piece on top of the pedastal is a section of a push pin.

Third, I added handles to the 20mm magazine (these loaded mags weighed 65 pounds) to make it look a bit better.

Fourth, I made a spent casing catch bag to go under the 20mm cannon. This bag started life as Italeri bag and was ten cut down, shaped to fit under the cannon where the white semi-circular piece is and then hollowed out a fair bit.

The piece to the right of the magazine isfrom a 1/35 scale anti-tank missile mount. There were three of these on that part and this one will be used as the base for the cannon sight. It's even offset already.

Next, I'll be scratch-building the restraining strap that goes from the cannon, around the gunner and back to the cannon.

Here are three images showing the parts I've built for this 20mm Oerlikon cannon thus far.

Thanks for looking. Comments are welcome.

Runover by a car?? OK. Looks good Peter. :popcorn

Hi Moon Puppy.

Yeppers. Run over by a car it then and had that run down compressed feeling. A few parts had fallen off when I was taking the boat to the pond and before I got them picked un a car ran over the pedastal and base plate. Fortunately the base plate wasn't damaged and i was able to detach the damaged pedastal without wrecking that base plate.

Working on a radar assembly for this boat.

Here's where I'm at now.

Is that stout enough if it gets hooked by your retrieval system?

Hi Moon Puppy.

Not if it got hooked directly and it was pulled hard. The retrieval system works by casting the line over the foredeck. At the pond I go to now it doesn't take much pressure on the line to reel the boat in. Not like there was trying to get it out of the weed bed at the other pond I no longer go to.

This unit was on a boat at one time but got broken off. You can see that the right leg of the radar mat itself is a bit shorter than the left leg. However the missing piece of the rigt eg is still on the dayroom cabin roof so that the mast legs will be even when it's reinstalled.

The radar mast can be folded down just like the one on the real boat could be. That helps keep my transporting box smaller.

You are really making me want to do something I havent done in almost 40 years. Maybe I'll take one of the Flower class destroyers and make a remote control boat.

Ahoy there James.

Ah, if only the real Flower Class Corvettes had the speed of a destroyer. ;<)

You should go for it as it can be very relaxing running the boat on the water once the model is finished. I had mine out the other day to test the new motor but I had radio interference problems. Even with the stuff on the motor to cut down interference. I'm shifting the receiver further forward and hope that fixes it. My fishing rod retrieval system works very well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did some painting of the 20 mm Oerlikon cannon and the 40 mm Bofors gun and the radar assembly. Unfortunately the Krylon green I used was NOT a close match at all for the green already used on the boat even though the cap colour was very close. Fortunately I discovered that the green spay can paint I used was Testor's 1913 Medium Green and I have a partial can and a full can in the paint stash. I'm going to wait a couple of more days before applying the Testor's paint over the Krylon because i don't want the Krylon paint to crack and/or lift.

Here's an image of the Krylon green beside the Testor's 1913 Green.

Ahoy there.

A bit of progress painting parts, working on the .50 cal MG tubs and also making a few changes to gain better access to the interior of the model and the receiver switch.

The large center portion of the deck from the charthouse (Fwd Cabin) to the engine room vents is removable. lindberg gives you two turn buttons with coin slots to hold the rear of this center deck in position. There are a couple of lips that go under the foredeck to hold the center deck down at the forward end. I didn't like those turn buttons with the slots in them. So,...

I drilled out the center of the bottom of each engine room vent and also the deck where the two engine room vents go. I then added a piece of styrene tubing to the inside of the engine room vents. Next I pushed the engine room vents through the deck from the top and cut off the excess styrene tubing. I then took two short pieces of styrene rod and squared off one end of each piece to a depth of about 1/8". I glued those square sections into the styrene deck anchors from the kit. I then glued the rod with the anchor section into an engine room vent from the underside of the center deck. Now the deck can be removed or sequred simply by turning the two engine room vents 1/4 turn.

This images shows the vents turned to either remove or replace the center deck.

This image shows the vent turned to lock the center deck in position. You can see the white tabs sticking out at 90 degrees to the edge of the deck and the engine room vents are facing forward.

This image shows the tabs from the underside of the center deck.

This image shows the foredeck hatch that's right in front of the charthouse. All my hatches can be opened and closed. The switch inside the white compartment under the hatch is the switch for the radio receiver.

This image shows that hatch closed.

Later today I'll post some images of the gun tubs and the radar assembly.

Thanks for looking. Comments are welcomed.

Ahoy there.

There doesn't appear to be much interest from others regarding this rebuild but I'll share this update with you and then see how it goes.

Been working on a radar assembly for the boat.

The top of the radar (not the screen) is made from a 1/48 scale P-40 drop tank and the outer hub of a 1/24 scale car. The horizontal circular part on the left side is a left over 1/24 scale car steering wheel. The box-like parts are various styrene boxes that have been modified.

This is where it's at now. Later I'll add a driveshaft mechanism that would rotate the radar assembly in real life.

Looking good Peter. Really like your calipers too Look like a nice set.
Ingenious use of spares for the radar.

Ahoy there Moon Puppy.

Thanks. You know what would be nice? A Viewed # of times counter so that one could see how many looked at a post.

I took a driveshaft off a busted 1/35 scale Deuce and a half to use for the radar control rod. It has the universal joint fittings and should look pretty good or at least better than just a length of styren rod. Images will follow once I've built that part.

I have another 1/32 scale Lindberg PT boat model that I'm building as an earlier variant than this boat I'm rebuilding. I'll be posting another thread on it once I sart it again and make some reasonable progress.

The 1/32 scale Lindber PT-109 kit is lousy kit. It's more a toy than even a semi-accurate model. To start with the hull is more like the 77' Elco boat than the 80' Elco boat that the 109 was. I think they used there 1/20 scale Chris Craft Constellation hull for the 109 model. To make matters worse they give you the wrong engine room vent as there were 4 tube type vents not 2 and the one large box-like vent the kit has. he guns are rod-like representations of the actual guns and there are no gun gurads at all for the 20 mm Oerlikon Cannon nor the .50 caliber gun tubs. I have to scratch-buld those too.To be fair though Lindberg was nice enough to send me 2 more of the proper vents and a number of other parts I asked to buy and they didso at no charge. The new 1/35 scale Italeri PT-109 kit is light years ahead of the ancient Lindberg kit. What's really surprising is that the 1/64 scale Lindberg PT-109 kit was really nice. Too bad they hadn't just scaled that kit up to 1/32 scale.
