North American AT-6/SNJ Texan
Revell Kit #85-5251
1/48th Scale
$15.00 on Sqaudron.com

History

The North American Aviation T-6 Texan was a single-engine advanced trainer aircraft used to train pilots of the United States Army Air Forces, United States Navy, Royal Air Force and other air forces of the British Commonwealth during World War II and into the 1950s. Designed by North American Aviation, the T-6 is known by a variety of designations depending on the model and operating air force. The USAAC designated it as the AT-6, the United States Navy the SNJ, and British Commonwealth air forces, the Harvard, the name it is best known by outside of the United States. It remains a popular warbird aircraft.

The Kit

This is Revell's latest version of the 1/48 AT-6/SNJ kit. This kit was originally released by Monogram in 1979. The kit comes in what seems to be Revell's standard sized box for these smaller single engine planes

The kit comes on three gray sprues and one small clear sprue. Detail consists of raised panel lines and raised rivets that are rather subdued.

The interior detail for a kit of this age seems to be pretty nice I think. It consists of raised detail on the fuselage wall as well as a cage that inserts into that.

The kit comes with two different options for the canopy as well as the upper cowling. One of them gives you the option to have a single gun

The instruction booklet is Revell's standard A4 size with generic color callouts

Decals are provided for two different aircraft. One early AT-6 from 1942 as well as an SNJ from 1956. Although the instructions state to use the same cowl for each one I think the gun version would be used for the early 1942 bird. But I'm not sure on that.

As you can see for the low price it looks to be a great kit. With enough research you can find any number of color schemes for this bird as well. I already started work on mine when I took the photos
