Big Freeze

Huh, Cold Lake is the second coldest place on Earth today with somewhere in Ontario being the coldest. For those that lost power today here and other snowy places, I hope you got it back quickly. For those that had to go out in this much, sorry, especially in the South for those not used to the snow.

How cold is it in Airmont, NY (no snow yet)?

Dog released steam power and it was quite visible! Reminded me of the Me-163 Farting Flea insignia!

Replace flea with pup!

Dang James, that's cold. Y'alls utilities are all buried right?

My electrician came by. Refused money, said he didn't want his name associated with this job. :rotf

Yep, that's a 30amp cable coming out of the panel and it goes to the plug for my generator (that's due delivery tomorrow). Hey, at least he put warning labels and interlocks on it!
He's going to quote me out replacing some hardware outside and installing 100 amp with a dedicated connection and interlock for generator. This will get us by.
Fingers crossed!

Started the evening at a balmy 23F (6:00pm). At 9pm we are at 10F. And the wind has picked up a wee bit. We do have a whole house in demand generator (one of the pleasure of living in Vermont) and 1000 gallons of propane in the tank so I’m pretty confident we won’t lose power - haven’t once since installing the dang thing, so not so cheap insurance? Just in case we keep a cord of wood in the basement and we have 2 wood stoves. We also have two propane gas fire places with battery back up. I hope you all fair well!

My electrician installs those systems for folks, we talked about it for here and I just don't see the justification for the expense. If we were out in the sticks that would be one thing but we're right on a feeder line that runs out two state highways. We'll get our power on pretty quick if it goes out. Besides, the hurricane last year took out the weak trees.
I'm really hoping this turns out to be just a cold rain for us.

Here in Western NC we are expecting ice Saturday night into late Sunday morning,it will go above freezing briefly on Sunday afternoon, then a deep freeze Monday and Tuesday.
Not sure what to expect as I only have been here 8 yrs and I only lost power during Helene for a day.No generator, but a gas fireplace, and propane stove and grill.
I just want to hunker down and watch the games sunday, fingers crossed

I have several roasts for the oven (low and slow cooking) which can help keep the kitchen warm. My biggest concern is always my roof. After suffering ice dams, and repairing the cause, I still don't trust my handiwork! 🤣

I've had no leaks but I 'attribute' that to my using a roof rake and ensuring that there is minimal to no snow on the roof where the ice dams occurred. I will be dead tired on Sunday.

Thursday at school our principal, Mrs. Mendoza showed up in our room with a hotdog on her head and conducted an unprovoked "Snowball" fight. The "Snowballs" were soft, multi-colored, plush balls that she assaulted our class with, and was properly pummeled in return. This occurred in every classroom this afternoon. Brooke is a Doozie! BTW, there is no alphabet people stuff in our school.

Thursday evening, we had heap big wind that blew almost all the gravel and dust and a small car in from the road. The last big white oak tree stood! As temperatures dropped, I turned the thermostat up to keep the pump for our water from having any difficulties. School was closed Friday. Temps were as brisk as -12 F. here, with almost no wind. As we speak, teensie snowflakes are drifting down from a cold, gray, ominous sky. We might see temps above zero today. Maybe.
Coffee is on. Blu-Ray player is running.
Stop by and have a cuppa, should you wish.

That and the generator that just got dropped off.
Spent the afternoon setting up and testing the generator. End results? Home Depot is telling me to return it for exchange. :bash::bash::bash:
Best laid plans, I would have done better going to a pawn shop and buying one second hand where I could test it. Yes, I've done all the troubleshooting.

Besides, after -43 yesterday, -31 feels tropical.
Young nephew tried to tell me when it's that cold another 10- doesn't matter. I told him he believes that because he's never experienced any temp that cold outside of the walk in food freezer.

At 8 pm here in N Ga. We have no snow or ice and don't expect any overnight. Local weather man says temps will unexpectedly stay above freezing into the morning...YAY!... Dodged a bullet. Hopefully it will be the same for you in SC Bob.

But the stew turned out great

I'm seeing the same thing Tim, they walking it back after grocery stores mark record sales.

BTW, this is how the beef stew turned out.
