Winchester Model 1897 history

I've acquired a model 1897 Winchester pump shotgun. Designed by John Browning in 1897 it proved so popular with the military it has been used in five wars. This shotgun has a unique feature, called "slamfire". Loading five shells in the tube and one in the chamber and holding the trigger it will fire as fast as you can pump it. It proved itself in WWI earning the nickname "trench broom" or "trench gun" It was so devastating in the Great War the Germans sent a letter protesting it's use in combat for being unusually cruel.
The only changes made for the military version was a cut down barrel, heat shield, and a sling.
Mine was built in 1903 and at 110 years old is in perfect firing condition. I have slamfired this gun several times. The action is still smooth. A beautifully designed gun with a colorful military history.
