WHAT NON MODELERS SAY ABOUT MODELING AND MODELERS

Ok I start some pretty heavy topics on here, but this time I wanted to put something up that we can laugh at. It seems that people who are not a part of our funny little hobby just don't get why we do it. This misunderstanding is not restricted to one sex or the other. The knucle draging sports guy can be just as bad as the self obsorbed female, and say some of the same idiotic things. We all have heard some of these statments either in our homes or at shows we attend. So lets explore these comments and have a laugh at the same time.

I'll start. A mother and small son our at a show I was attending and as they walked by the tables the mother says in a rather snide tone "Jacob don't touch the toys". Now maybe she was just trying put the models on the table in terms the boy could understand or was that what she was really thinking.

Post up some of the things you have heard.

With my wife it's often a simple "You're insane"

What they are really saying is that you are wasting your time and that they are spending their time more wisely.

Last Saturday was community registration day. Where all tbe clubs gather in one place for new recrutes. Had an old lady come up, pick up my St.Chamond shake it and ask can I play with your toys. Eyes bulging I politely said NO. She puts it down and wanders off. Had maybe 4 or 5 people come and ask questions. Pretty well everyone else avoided us.

Linda complained about the quantity of my stash and that I spend waaaayyyy to much on my kits. I confirmed to her that sh has more purses and shoes than I have kits in the stash. She quit talking to me which is OK after 22 years of marriage.

If I do say something about doing the hobby I always get "yeah I did that when I was a kid.". For years I've been trying to think up a snappy comeback but the closest I get is. "Well it's cheaper than drinkin'." and that fell flat when used on some of Cindy's church friends.

I find the Engineers like what I show them, which gives me pause in itself because they cause me so much trouble..

Now you know why it's a solitary hobby. You're a sissy or childish if you do it. I stopped telling my friends about my model building in 3rd grade for this reason. Discovering an IPMS club got me out of the closet as it were.

One guy (read our rivetcounter) in our club makes the manga figurines and at one time i heard an older lady say to her husband "that's kitch" funny to see the face of the guy when he heard that about he's girls and then Veerles mother asked why he was so nervous about someone touching them...."are they not good glued?" that made mine and Veerles day :yipee

My wife is fully supportive of my hobby and tells everyone about it,....

My daughter thinks Im a geek but she does confess that I am a very good at my geekishness !! :hmmm

I have a wide circle of friends and some like what I do but others do not have a clue as they would rip the shit out of me for doing my hobby thats why you probably wont find a mention rarely if any on my facebook page.

I find that the older I get, the less I'm inclined to explain myself to anyone. The days of trying to convince someone of the worth of anything just isn't worth it.

My usual response to 'what are you up to?' is a simple 'keepin' out of trouble...'

If I do discuss anything hobby related, it usually stays on the historical side, never straying into the modeling aspect. In my area, I interact with a lot of Dads that from West Point. Of all the people you would think would be open minded to this hobby, anytime modeling came up, it would end the conversation, so I stopped any thought of discussing it, no matter what. I guess I got tired of defending a hobby that isn't really understood of seen as childish.

Downside to that was evident with one West Point Dad in particular: I saw this guy three times a week for a year picking up my son from school and we never had a conversation in depth beyond the weather. About a week before the end of the semester, in passing I find out he's a professor of History dealing specifically with Operation Torch. We had a few great conversations over the last days, but could have the entire year.
