Wear on styrene track links?

Shalom.

Getting the chips, scratches and such onto the rubbr pads of my styrene link and length tracks for my Hobby Craft M1A1 model is very tedious.

How do you people model wear on similar track blocks?

Thanks and cheers from Peter

Good question. I dont think I've ever done it or seen it done. Will be interesting to hear.

Shalom James.

Hopefully someone else has done this. In the meantime I'm going to plug away at doing mine. I might even get them finished by the time someone else tells how they do it. Maybe i should keep a photographic record of my method and do a Step by step for anyone who wants to apply wear and tear to their track pads too.

Cheers from Peter

Hi Peter! I'm no expert on modern armor, but I used this technique on the tracks for my Borgward.

Paint the tracks the color you want them, then dry brush the pads with a rubber color. Panzer Aces has a Dark Rubber and Light Rubber color that work well, you could also use Tamiya Nato Black. I'm certain Humbrol has colors in that range as well, I just don't recall what color numbers they are. If you want to depict damage, you'll need to add that to the pads and that will be tedious. This method is one I have used, you could try it on your pads. https://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/ian-hill/20904-damaging-rubber-tyred-tank-wheels

Best wishes, hope this helps. :good:

Shalom.

I guess that no one else has ever distressed tracks. Or, they don't want to share their techniques.

That link to the distressing of road wheel tires is good. I'll be doing my road wheel tires after my tracks are done or I want to take a break from working on the tracks.

I'm currently filing some old tools into wedge/chisel shapes to make chipping the track blocks easier. I'll post some imges of them when I've finished making them.

Cheers from Peter

Just saw an article where the fellow used his dremel tool with a ball router and on slow speed bounded it across the surface. Dont know if that will help much Peter.
