"Tour Jackets, Souvenirs, and Trinkets" Completed

Great job !! I still have my tour jacket and my daughter has the doll I bought. Gary S.

Thanks, Gary.

So this scene probably brings back some memories. I remember wearing my dad's tour jacket to school when I was in the 4th or 5th grade and my sister still has her doll. My dad had also brought back an Ao Dai or two for my mom, but my sister wore one for Halloween one year. I also remember there being one or two of those black lacquer paintings but I don't know whatever happened to them.

Aside from any last minute touch ups and adding the title plate, here is the completed diorama barely in time for the Tulsa Figure Show which is tomorrow. Things added since the last update are the Vietnamese black lacquer paintings and a cat that I painted to look like my cat Creamsicle. When I was gluing down the painting in the middle of the three figures and cat, the left side slid forward leaving a glue trail on the tile which resulted in a string of four letter explicatives. I had to repaint several tiles, but I think it worked out to hide the mishap.

When I was planning the layout for my display for the show, I saw that the groundwork method I used for the "Buying Baguettes and Banh Mi" diorama did not match what I used for this diorama and the vignette "GI! GI! You Buy!", so I textured and repainted the dirt areas the best I could in order to give continuity among the three works.

I will take better photos of this diorama and of the display later after the show.

Well, I took some better photos of this diorama this afternoon. I took some at the show, but the majority of my photos were really blurry for some reason. These that I took in my pop up photobooth seem ok. There are a bunch of them from various angles. Then there are two photos of the three pieces that make up the "Shopping in Long Thanh" series, one showing my display at the show and another in the photobooth.

The show was pretty fun. I ended up with a bronze medal for my WW1 Tank Crew, a silver medal for my "Buying Baguettes and Banh Mi" diorama, the Tulsa Show Displayers Award for my entire "Shopping in Long Thanh" display, and a sponsored award for the best Post WW2 Military Subject for my "GI! GI! You Buy!" vignette. This Saturday is the Oklahoma City AMPS/IPMS show which I plan on attending as well.

Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
James
