Stripping Vallejo paint from resin?

Adam Baker

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to strip Vallejo paints from resin? I need to strip the Waffen SS figures I'm working on. THe paints are all Vallejo acrylics.

I know that Windex w/ Ammonia will take off Tamiya, will it do the same for Vallejo? What about other things to strip w/? I've got a gallon of Purple Power that I've used to strip styrene, but I think I've heard that PP can be harmful to resin, but I'm not sure.

I usually use an ultrasonic cleaner with 20% Simple Green, 80% water, a splash of Windex with ammonia, and three drops of grease cutting dish detergent (not the kind that is gentle to your hands though as these contain fats which stick to the model). It has removed all kinds of acrylics.

I would say that you should experiment by painting a resin mounting block first if you fear ruining your figures.

Regards,

Sorry to hear you're having issues, Adam. I'd rather take a beating than strip anything, wondering why you couldn't lighten the mix of your and color repaint the piece? Vallejos are thin and cover well, seems like a better way to go. Good luck!

Well, I've already got like 4 layers of paint on the figures, and some of the 2nd layer is visible, I guess I put it down too thick. I might try just painting over it again, and see what happens, before stripping.

Whenever I need to strip off paint I use a domestic over cleaner then a through good washing in hot water/washup liquid afterwards

However it does have a downside,...when I get the cleaner out of the cupboard the Wife gives me and expectant glance to which a simple " No love, Models" soon makes the look disapear

:D

You would not just happen to be a reloader would you? If so sue your vibratory tumbler that is used to polish brass with corn cob or walnut media

I would use oven cleaner. Just spray it on the piece, let it settle for about 30 minutes and brush off the paint with an old toothbrush or alike. Works for me.

Well, I was able to strip the figures, using alcohol & Purple Power. I started w/ the alcohol, and it seemed to loosen the paint, but didnt do a whole lot. Soaked them in Purple Power for about 24 hrs and the paint all came right off, including the primer that I'd put on them.

91% rubbing alcohol took week-old Vallejo Primer off in moments. Photographic proof:

Hmm, was that Vallejo brushed or airbrushed on, looks to me like it was probably airbrushed?

I used 91% IPA, and it seemed to loosen it some, but it definitely didnt flake off like that, but mine was brushed on by hand, so it was almost certainly have been a lot thicker coat of paint.

I airbrushed it, thinned with Gunze Mr Color Thinner. It sat for a week, and I was mildly surprised that it came off so easily. I made sure to clean the parts with alcohol first to get the grease off. It will make a nice color coat or undercoat, but not for anything that needs masking or sanding. Good luck1
