Some in-progress pics of painting my new backdrops

Recently I painted a couple of new backdrops and thought they might be of interest on this site.

My backdrops are made from white foam board and painted with enamel model paints, the foam board for the small backdrop was bought from a local Wal-Mart for a few dollars, the large foam board sheet for the larger backdrop was harder to get and had to be special ordered from an art supply shop and was about $30.00.

The very first step in painting my backdrops was painting the base coat for the sky, in this case I used a rattle can of Testors sky blue paint and was the easiest part of this project.
Near the bottom of this pic you can see the can of spray paint, this will give you an idea of the size of the larger backdrop.

Next up was adding the happy little clouds, this was done using my airbrush.

Here I started adding some trees...

...and here is the finished large backdrop.

Below is the finished small backdrop (no in-progress pics were taken of this one)

And here are some test pics of the backdrops posed with my photobase and some older models, first the large backdrop

Here is the airbrush used for almost all the painting, the simple Iwata Revolution BR, an airbrush that can do almost anything.

Thanks very much Dusan!

After looking at my test pics I want to darken some of the trees on the large backdrop so they will better match the trees on my photobase.
Next time I have some dark green paint in the airbrush I will take care of the problem.

You sort of glossed over the making of the trees part.

Hey you going to share with us, I'm going to squeeze every bit I can out of ya! :mpup

Love the force perspective stuff also, mixing scales to give greater depth of field.. (y)

Actualy Les, I think that you should leave the trees lighter in the backdrop and remove the ones that that are close to it, to my eye it creates that misty in the distance look, just an opinion. They realy do look great tough, excellent work.

And I think if you add a tree or two here to break up the space, it gives the impression of a clearing, possibly a small swamp or something behind the tree line. this is just my impression.

Ok heres me thinking when you post up the original shots I wonder where he lives cos that scenery looks nice

Only to find out that you actually piainted it or even painted it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My hat off to you Sir

That's just simply AMAZING artwork!!! (y)
I wished I could do something like that!

...so it's all basicly done by airbrush? :woohoo:

Greetings,Ron.
