Revell 1/350 Bismarck

ug this one out of the WIP grave yard last week. I am doing this OOB with the exception of not using the decals for hull. Everything is done the old fashioned way by masking and spraying.

Base was completed and holes for the dowels drilled in the base and the hull. That huge ugly gap isn't visible underneath:

Most of the hull is done as well as the main deck. I need to do some touch ups since masking around the barbettes was hit and miss I also plan on masking and picking out a few planks to give some variation:

The main and secondary batteries are done with the exception of the 15in. gun barrels, They will be painted the same colors as the turret tops:

Stripes for the hull were masked and the white sprayed on today. Tomorrow I'll mask and spray the black:

That's it for now. The next few days will be a sub-assembly marathon.
Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

looking forward to the next steps,Jeff!

That's a nice wooden base you got there.Custom made?

Greetings,Ron.

Thanks, Ron. The base is from Hobby Lobby. Six bucks. I stained it my self and drilled all the holes and cut the dowels to size. I guess you can call it "custom made" ;)

Greetings Jeff;

..... She is looking nice ....... :popcorn

Last year I picked up a 1/350th scale Tirpitz model kit
made by MiniHobbyModels .... from China. I had never
heard of this manufacture before.

The model is real nice....... and I do not see any problems
with it.

........ Saul, may-haps you can help here. Do you have any idea
whose molds they are using .... ?

She is looking very good........ :mpup

Wow- I make a rent payment in Hobby Lobby at least three times a year- have not seen a base like that. You did the right thing, build it on the base! Great score.

Thanks, fellas.
Got the stripes masked and painted and did a little touch up here and there:

Victor, how long this will take is really up to me and how much time per day I devote to it. I'm hoping to be done in a few months.

Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

I ask because I never maked a battle ship..and the time is very important(I calculate 2 hours/day,more or less)
Until now,looks great!
All the best,
Victor

Nice start on the Bismarck. What is your overall impression of this kit? I know that RoG kits, even new releases can be a hit and miss deal especially in the fit department. Their detail is usually pretty good on their newer releases.

Nice start Jeff, really like that. Wonder how affective that camo was when viewed at sea?

Not sure how effective Bismark's scheme was but some "Razzle Dazzle" paintwork sure would confuse someone trying to get a visual speed and heading on it.

Nice model so far (y)

Especially on a 80' Elco running 30 kts. May do that Dazzle scheme one day, our buddy Kenny Loop has the mask for it.

I'd love to do one too moon. Mabey a scratchbuilt large scale not to detailed model built to just show off the crazy paint scheme.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. As far as fit goes, it's pretty hit and miss. There are a lot of gaps between the upper decks and the bulkheads. I plan on fixing those with a little Mr. surfacer.

Vic, as far as how long it would take; If you only have a couple of hours a day then maybe plan ahead on what you will do each day. What I mean is day 1- spray the bottom half of the hull, day 2- mask it and spray the upper half, day3- yadda yadda yadda. You get the idea. A lot can be done in two hour blocks if you plan ahead. The main and secondary batteries can actually wait until the very end since those will be the last things that you attach.

OK, enough stalling, here is where I am so far:

The swastikas and surrounding areas where by far the most tedious part since Revell gives you nothing but a diagram to work with. I ended up spraying the area black first, printing some swastikas out and laying them on masking tape and then cutting them out and laying them over the black, spraying the white, making a circle out of masking tape and laying it over the swastika after removing that mask, masking off the forward and aft sections and then spraying the red. It took me 3 tries to get it right.

Most of the tedious parts are done (minus the rigging) so I anticipate rolling right along from here on out.
