Revell 1/350 Bismarck

Very nice work. It always made me chuckle knowing that the Germans painted the swastikas on the bow and stern for friendly aircraft identification. I can see that conversation.

"Hans, we need to paint our national emblem on the deck so our air force pilots won't mistake us as the enemy and bomb us."

"But sir, won't that make it easy for the enemy to find us?"

I believe they painted it over as soon as they left the Baltic sea.
If I remember correctly, almost all of the camouflage and markings on Bismarck had been overpainted when she left Norway. Even if the allies had more or less control of the air in the Atlantic, Luftwaffe had control around Norway, Denmark and Germany, so I feel that it wasn't that strange. Better to be identified by the enemy, than sunk by your own.:)
