P-38J Question

Greetings Gene;

It appears that the P-38/J used the 20mm, (x2), & the .50cal machine gun, (x3).

Hi Gene, not too sure about the others but 8th and 9th Airforce P 38J were mixed so you'll need to select a particular Squadron, time and place to determine your finish.

I've seen P-38J's in both NMF and camo. A good source of profiles for them is Wing Palette http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/f/298/3

Whoa! While it did carry 5 automatic weapons, the distribution was a 20mm Hispano (in the center) flanked around the top by 4 M2 12.7mm (50 Cal) machine guns.

As for whether it must be in natural metal, no, it doesn't. My J will be in the Green Dragon's scheme:

Decals are available for this scheme for Haleakala.

Something not too expensive!! Doesn't have to be a J. 1/32 scale. That can be done in paint as opposed to NMF.

The only cheap ones are the ancient Revell kits which need a lot of filler...

Here is one with a very good Buy it now price:

Maybe British.

The British only had three Model 322s and rejected them. Read this as you would have your work cut out for you to modify them to the P-38D standards which were, in turn, modified by the British:

"
R.A.F. P-38

SOME P-38 ENTHUSIASTS MAY NOT BE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THE LIGHTNING WAS REJECTED BY THE R.A.F. AS UNSUITABLE FOR ITS ORIGINAL ROLE AS A HIGH ALTITUDE FIGHTER. THE THREE PLANES THAT WERE DELIVERED TO THE R.A.F. FOR TESTING PURPOSES IN EARLY 1942 WERE TECHNICALLY LOCKHEED MODEL 322's (BASICALLY P-38 E's WITH MECHANICAL INSTEAD OF TURBO-SUPERCHARGERS). THESE WERE EQUIPPED WITH THE EARLY V-1710-C15 ENGINES WHICH DEVELOPED ONLY 1090 H.P. ALSO THE R.A.F. REMOVED THE COUNTER-ROTATING PROPELLER SYSTEM, AGAINST THE ADVICE OF LOCKHEED, THE MODEL 322's BECAME KNOWN AS THE "CASTRATED LIGHTNING". ONE GOOD THING THAT CAME OUT OF ALL THIS WAS THE R.A.F.'S SELECTION OF THE NAME "LIGHTNING" FROM A LIST SUGGESTED BY LOCKHEED. HAPPILY THE USAAF WAS QUICK TO ADOPT THE NAME ITSELF. THE ORIGINAL NAME INTENDED TO BE USED BY LOCKHEED WAS "ATLANTA" (SORRY ALL YOU GEORGIA MEMBERS). DURING ITS TWO YEARS WITH THE R.A.F. IT PERFORMED VALUABLE SERVICE AND PROVIDED A UNIQUE, THOUGH OBSCURE, CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE LOCKHEED "LIGHTNING".

Did you buy the model? The one I linked definitely would need new decals as they seem wrinkled and would probably crack.
