I have had 5 German Shepherds in my life, Loved them all! Fantastic dogs!

I switched to Dobermans back in 1990. We've had five of them since. They have similar characteristics with Shepherds, especially the loyalty thing, but, they don't shed. That made my wife happy!

And congratulations to you Barney.

I've never had a Bassett Hound, but we have a dog that is the same color!
