M3 Grant Royal Scots Greys

I've got the Verlinden resin bits added to the lower hull and given it a quick shot of primer.

Next will be some surgery on the Tamiya upper hull and turret to fit the resin for the 75mm area, 37mm turret details and basket.

Cheers,

Re: M3 Grant 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars

So, while trolling the web for info on the three colour camouflage of the Scots Greys M3's, Allysloper & April V, as shown on Echelons' decal sheet, some interesting info was revealed.

Pictures from the IWM collection, dated 29 Mar 1942, show Stuarts & Grants from 4th Brigade being painted in this scheme . The colours have been debated on several sites and I tend to agree with the use of Light Stone on the vertical surfaces fading into Silver Grey 28 on the horizontal surfaces (being somewhat lighter than the background of the WD number) with irregular patches of Purple Brown.

Of more interest, since the publication of Echelons' sheet, an after action report has surfaced, thanks to Shane Lovell. The report outlines the virtual destruction of HQ, A & B Sqdns of 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars on 27 May 1942 near Bir Hacheim from survivor interviews. April V was listed as an A Sqdn Troop Leader's (Lt Gibbs) mount and was destroyed along with 6 other named and 2 unamed Grants. One A Sqdn Grant survived as it was undergoing repairs in the rear and 1 Stuart that was acting as an Intercom vehicle. B Sqdn lost all 9 Grants that were engaged with only 1 Stuart (Intercom) and 1 Grant, also out for repairs, surviving. C Sqdn lost 6 of it's 15 Stuarts that went into action. HQ Sqdn lost both Grants and the Stuart that went into action.

This ties into the Scots Greys history as they handed over their tanks to units that had been mauled in fighting in the spring and didn't get into action until July 1942.

So, after further review, my Grant will now be Lt Gibbs' April V, lost in action 27 May 1942 while with A Sqdn, 8th KRIH.

The end of April V, from the after action report :

5. Name of tank : April V
(Lt Gibbs commanding - Troop Leader. This tank is indicated well in the lead of A Squadron on the right of the diagram.)
Information from : Capt Ames who was in General Stuart tank
(intercommunication see diagram)

This tank was one of the first put out of action, it was apparently penetrated through the left hand side door by an 88 mm A/T shell. The shot amputated the commanders legs above the knees. No one else was injured and all were able to evacuate the tank. The crew were rescued by Capt Ames in his tank and though the commander Lt Gibbs received a scrum transfusion almost immediately from the MO who was close at hand he died two hours later.

This tank caught fire as the result of numerous other hits and when the petrol tanks or 75 mm ammunition blew up the turret was blown off and the sides of the tank rolled out like the petals of a flower.

Cheers,
Richard
