Probably the reason it has survived so well and so long in good condition is due to the broken stem. It broke and was put away rather than repaired.
Congratulations on the nice find Paddy! I am sure that there is someone in your area that might be able to repair it. Do your diligence on checking them out if you decide to repair it. There are those that have the skill to restore it properly, there are adequate watchmakers, then there are the "botchmakers" that damage and destroy watches. It won't be cheap, but might be worthwhile depending on how you feel about it.

Several years ago I did a restoration on a watch that went through a house fire.

It had heat, fire, smoke, and water damage. I was able to clean and restore the plate and bridges inside. Restored the case and bracelet. Replaced the dial with new OEM dial (exchange only) The water damage and heat damage were the majority of the damage and the rusted parts had to be replaced. If it had been sent to the Rlx service center they wouldn't have repaired it they would have told the owner to replace it.

What you have is a watch where there are no parts available. Any needed part will have to be repaired or made. If it needs a mainspring that part can be replaced as there are mainsprings available that will work. The stem will probably have to be made, but that is something that can be easily done.

That is a bit of a miracle paul .all credit to you.
I think i can see now why it was in auction as not working. Using some gorilla double sided tape and a 6 inch steel rule as a lever i have the back turning but thats all it does ie: its not unscrewing. I haven't tried the front as the glass is not flat so its not straight forward.

Update, it occurred to me that it wouldn't turn so evenly if it was a stripped thread and although there is no lip to lever on i managed to prize the back off.....to reveal another back

That one clips as well
Its jewelled movement but i would guess it wouldn't score more than 3/10 for quality.

it will require a strip down to get to get to winder mechanism..

Yea but i went from an acquisition to a watch makers how too. I just watched a you tube video on how to strip a watch If i can unwind the spring, it may already be unwound, remove the balance mech and the crown wheel i shouldn't need to go any further to remove the winder mech. I am very competent with fine assembly engineering but i am not sure about removing the hands, that said i may not need too.
