A bit of self indulgence here but this is quite rare now and i have never had an original Protar model.
its streets ahead of later Italeri copies although they never did copy this model so its Protar or nothing. Spokes in the wheels are almost the right thickness and the frame and other parts are white metal
I took a chance on it as it was £60 in an ebay auction and all the "buy it nows" were over £100
Good news was its been sold by St lukes hospice charity here so even if it turned out to be rubbish it was a great cause. As it is its fantastic and even the decals are useable
One day i might find the AJS 7R from Protar to go with it

Todays act of self indulgence saw the arrival of a hole drilling device know as a "drill"
Obviously its way to nice use so will find a place in my display cabinet soon
Seriously its variable speed and the black box power supply seems to boost the torque significantly at very slow speeds. chuck seems to be pretty near spot on although i haven't put a dial gauge on it yet, finish is excellent and chuck is 4mm. unit stands about 12 inch tall so very small
It also has reverse ??? why would you want to go in reverse on a drill ? left had holes maybe
I put quite a large order in with these people and all parts are in transit but all in separate boxes....no idea why

I have been eyeing the version with the micrometer feed on this.

So this is the XYZR Axis Precision Fine Tuning Cross Slide.
If you want to micro precision position something this is the answer. probably a little over kill for what i need but i wanted to future proof myself and not need to upgrade in the future.
A couple of points if you go down this road, order the drill press with the extended length pillar and the larger base plate because this set up is to tall for the std pillar . If you want absolute precision order the drill press with collets, not chuck. Don't be deceived by the size. This is small those are half size mic's and the one on the top front of the bottom picture is 1" long so about 1/4 size...it is all beautifully made and finished

those are half size mic's and the one on the top front of the bottom picture is 1" long so about 1/4 size...it is all beautifully made and finished
it's a pretty piece of machinery. What's the mounting points like, could you secure it to a standard drill press?

It has a detachable base plate that is 6cm x 6cm with numerus M4 tapped holes, again note this is very small and will only be of use for model and watch making, its also really designed to fit the mini drill press above.
it fascinates me as a life long professional tool maker but will probably go over the head of the average model maker etc. TBH.

That is one REALLY NICE tool Paddy!
They have some small precision vices that I will probably jump on next year.
As a watchmaker, I have looked at the drill press and this micrometer unit myself. These are very finely make pieces and to be honest if I were going to be doing watch repair for another 20 + years I would seriously buy them. As it is I have my small mill that I added digital quills to the XYZ axis years ago. Those made it quite a useable platform.
Someone asked me years ago what I planned on using those tools for. I replied that I had no plans for them instead I bought them "For what they allowed me to plan".
That has been the case for many years.
Now I will be getting a desktop CNC Machine sometime in January as the Kickstarter just closed yesterday. Not sure what I will use it for yet, but oh boy what will I be able to plan.
I guess that the next thing will be a 3D printer.

ha ha dont ask me what i will do with this lot, the Lathe arrived today as well.
I dont have plans but as you say, it allows you to plan and expand your horizons. TBH i will get my moneys worth just by looking at them Finally, i haven't won the lottery or struck oil, this is just my retirement present to myself and its was something i always wanted to do at this stage of life. You spend a lifetime learning a skill, its hard to just stop
What CNC are you after ? 3 axis ? lathe or mill ? The4se people do a lathe and mill with CNC as well.

I should get it in January. Have most of the accessories with it as well. "Should" do about anything I can foresee doing at least hobby wise. Might even be able to make small parts like the distributor I just did for the 251. At this point I don't really have any photos to post, but all of the stuff will cost me about $2k. I am going to have to learn Blender before I can really get busy with it though.
