Re: Italeri Chevrolet 15CWT
Crates as promised, since you insisted.
The material is from the folks at Evergreen and was picked up at my favorite Hardware/Hobby shop. The large material (#188) is used for the end blocks, and the (#106) is used for the planking.
The trick is to set up a cutting jig to assembly –line cut the planks (8 to 10 per crate). You just need to pick a length for the finish crate and set up a stop block to saw or cut the strip stock. I tried to match the approximate length of a crate from another kit. It can be longer or shorter as desired. All the stock is .125” (3.2mm) wide, so that (or some multiple of that number) becomes the default dimension. (In this case as shown, the crate is one multiple high (3.2mm). for a flat crate effect. the grey one, and the others built in the following pictures, are two multiples high
I found that once the cut was established in the table top, that it was easier and cleaner to just chop the strip with an exacto blade.
Cut the end blocks (to length) to some multiple of the number of planks you want to use (three planks in this example –about 9mm) and glue up against a square surface.
Plank the top using the (#136) .030” stock as a spacer between the planks. Flip it over and do the other side.
The work in progress. I am using the thin #136 for the top and end cross braces, and some steched spru to simulate banding around the crates.
And finally an experiment with a possible load-in for the truck bed.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
Bill
