Heller 1/72 Dassault Mirage F1C Fleacon 21 Raffle Turd

How many parts to the main landing gear? 8 for each side! Remember how fondly I was beginning to think about this kit?
No so much anymore. The parts fit kinda almost pretty good. When all the parts are finally assembled, I hope it's pretty solid.
This designer must have gone on to a top-flite job at UM.
Saints preserve us!

Gotta think about how the project manager gave the landing gear team only 4 cubic feet to squeeze the landing gear in and close the door. Ever see how many parts are on the C5 main gear to tuck up in that space they have?

:popcorn

Neither of you thought why the Russians did the same with their Floggers? 😲🤯

The completed main landing gear didn't turn out so badly. I hope all 6 of the friggin' wheels will touch the ground.

A test-dip of the Esci decals Saul sent me saw the one chose fracture into slivers. No worries, Mate. A coat of Microscle liquid decal fluid to the rescue! The decals are younger than the kit by a shade and are still brittle, for lack of a better description. Several coats of Solva-setm snuggled them down. I have an acrylic red that is a close match for the insignia.

I had a shark mouth I liked, and applied a pair of these.
This is the most model fun I've ever had with a started Raffle Turd!
Thanks again for looking in!

Cool Castles!

Yes, I should warn you (and anyone else using older decals) to place in very warm (obviously not boiling) water to not only release them but soften the decal film. How hot? If it is uncomfortable, you have reached the temperature!

@Rhino knows this as he mentions overcoating decals with a clear varnish as another way to ensure usability as well as the aforementioned, by @Rhino, Microsoft Liquid Decal Film. Well worth the investment even if only making your own decals:

I do my best to keep the materials, tools and accessories I have success with available to my TLAR-ian customers.
That, and every inkjet printed decal I make needs this to protect the ink.

Remember how the J-57 heated the outer skin on the ol' Super Sabre? I wonder if the Atar 9K-50 engine did the same thing to the Mirage F1c? Mine did! I got her stood up and all 6 friggin' tires do touch the ground. It's a MIRACLE! (or I cheated.)

Decals and stencils are just about wrapped up. Notice the victory markings? My buddy Francisco commented that one of the Khmer stencils read "Do not wash your hands here." I chuckled and told him that we were the only model geeks that could read Khmer, and that I found all these copy/pasting signs and placards from around the Phnom Penh International airport. "No Parking" "Ladies Lounge" "Baggage Check". :stinker:
Francisco must understand less Khmer language than I think he does!

I'm pretty sure the national insignia symbolize the Angkor Wat temple.

Here are the zoomie-boom things I have planned. I planned an AGM-84 on the centerline, but it is so long it blanked the nose gear retraction. Mr. Bullpup will ride the center line with a Harpoon on each wing, rather than a single Harpoon and the Mavericks on the wings that made better sense.
She's a notorious nocturnal maritime striker, "The Terror of the Indian Ocean". It's car fixing day, so models will have to wait until later.

It is VERY hard to tell that is a turd from all the polishing! My only critique, if allowed (and easy to do), would be to ensure the sharkmouth doesn't go over the black radar nose paint.

What?! Cut back on the shark mouth?
:smack:

You know what? Never mind!

Lol, great looking build, Rhino, just catching this, which means I'm a slacker!
NO worries, Ski. I don't expect every member to be interested in what I post.
A lot of you guys still have day jobs.
I'm with Bob. I enjoy all different kinds of model making.
You never know where inspiration will be found or when you can learn a new trick or technique!

I've never gotten why some would say, oh that's a car model. I don't care about car models so I don't comment on someone taking the effort to share with us what they are working on. OK they don't say that but that's the way I hear it.

A model is a model, I'm all about any of them except Legos....

Bang seat handles. They used to be 1/700 life rings.

I considered blanking the mouth where it overlaps the nosecone. I could relocate the eyes as well. I will add some PRC kill marks.
I wanted to add a Phnom Pehn telephone book for the diminutive Cambodian steely-eyed and deadly fighter pilot to sit on, but a stopping place must be found and I'm there.

For the record, as most of you have guessed by now, Cambodia never flew a Dassault Mirage F1c or any other kind of fighter jet.
It was never my intention to deceive my Brothers. In my addled laid-off brain I drew up night mission plans that shuttle between the Ban Kham Dorang, over the South China Sea, to Sanya, Taiwan, interdicting ChiCom shipping and aircraft. Pei Palad Cho!! Fala faht Kachi!
In any case, some Know-It-All Plick will comment about the accuracy of this build at a show and we can all share a good laugh!
