HawkCon 2024. Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Blackhawk Modelers Society of Yarmouth, Iowa is presenting their annual model contest. This will occur in Mount Pleasant Iowa on Saturday, 21 September.
The Blackhawks have been ardent supporters of SurgiCon for a long time, so I feel some Quid Pro Quo is in order.

This will be our first trip to HawkCon, so I can enter new builds, and old favorites and still get some laughs! Expect to see the Samurai Bathtub among my entries, just one more time!

I doubt many of our members will come along to play with "the Cool Kids", so I shall do what I can to keep you all abreast of the on-goings.
Expect to see a lot of shiny car models!

A few entries making their contest debut. Ready for Hawkcon show fun! USCGC Active got her flags and stern hull numbers.

Antelope got her Nova Scotia flag this morning and is ready to sail for the East!
Expect to see The Samurai Bathtub, Ron's Bunnies, and a few other favorites! The first time to a new show, a guy can enter anything he wants to!

Raffle wins! Teresa actually won 14 prizes, but we gave the last 2 winning tickets to a youngster. All these kits are for sale! (Except for the USCG HH-35A Dolphin. That one is MINE!) The Monogram 1/48 B-24J Liberator has no decals, but 1/48 Kits World "The Dragon and His tail" decals are on the the way.

If you see something you wish for, speak up before I get them listed on tlarmodels.com. Prices for my M/A brethren will be attractive! You gotta pay the freight.

Some of the proceeds will go to ease Bob's $720.00 annual bill for maintaining the website we all enjoy.

Sallying forth 1440 hrs 20 September from NAS White Oak, the Shocking Pink Surgeons hope ot arrive in Mount Pleasant 1700-ish.
We checked in at the Best Western and went to supper at The Press Box. I had "The Special". Chicken fried steak, questionable gravy and yummy tater tots. I paid for my choice that evening. Gastric distress that isn't model related. Yuck!

CGC Active is making her contest debut here in Mount Pleasant. The Blackhawks have been supporters of the Plastic Surgeons contest for many moons. Plastic Surgeon Jose Luis Gonzalez made the drive Saturday morning to vend and enter in the Blackhawk Modelers Society's second show as well. It was good to see others of our merry band supporting this fledgling IPMS chapter.
On to the Show!
20240921_110613.jpg20240921_110627.jpg20240921_110720.jpg20240921_110734.jpgRegistration went briskly. I entered 10 of the 11 models I carried along for $19.00. The simplified entry form was a breeze to fill out. You can register your models on the IPMS/USA website and enter them remotely in any IPMS contest you go to. My relationship with IPMS/USA is nearing it's end, so I don't wanna do that, see?! Good ol' Bob Delaney was their to provide guidance and enjoy Hawkcon fun!

We bought our customary $40.00 (48) raffle tickets for the Show raffle. There were some commentary on "That lady over there wins all the raffle prizes". Look! Support the Club! Buy the raffle tickets! Enter the show! The Hawkcon 2024 raffle was a little short on armor kits and not as large as other club contest raffles are, but bear in mind, this is their 2ND show! The raffle went until all the prizes had been claimed, just as it should.

On the back wall was the collection of a senior modeler that passed away. All these Monogram vintage kits beckoned to me! Pricing seemed a tad exorbitant and some prices were reasonable for such an event, ($120.00 for a 1/48 Monogram PBY kit? YIKE!) I did make one purchase. Proceeds from the sale of this collection will go to support the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, as per the last wishes of a vintage Model Maker. At these price points, it may take quite some time to peddle this huge model collection. I advise the "Make a pile, Make an offer" strategy, perhaps?

The well-lit, roomy venue is a keeper! It's a Calvary Baptist church activity center, but no soldiers or horses were on hand. Parking was plentiful, bathrooms and dining places where near. The is still a Pizza Hut and a Hardee's in Mount Pleasant! No. The isn't an actual mountain here. Vendors lined the periphery. Lots of car models and accessories!
20240921_110618.jpg20240921_110615.jpg20240921_112409.jpg
Virgil Stanbary and Big Bill Robertson hold down the fort selling Virgil's 1/24 & 1/25 resin car body selection. Virgil prefers 1/43 car models these days. "More space". He's a great guy and a fine model builder! Larry Claussen enters and vends as well. Another good friend of ours!

Don't worry, we're almost to the models!!

Dioramas. The 1/35 Kugelpanzer workshop and vignette was pretty neat!
20240921_112452.jpg20240921_112456.jpg20240921_1124561.jpg
Big airplanes. All other airplanes, 1/72 and 1/48 scale. Frank Miller's 1/72 VF-1 F-14A Tomcat "Wichita 101" was stunning!
20240921_112504.jpg20240921_112532.jpg20240921_112539.jpg20240921_112546.jpg20240921_110729.jpg
6 categories for automotive. The '56 Chrylsler in "Factory Stock" was a beauty, but it didn't have any windshield or rear window in it. The AMT '70 Torino Cobra was dear to me, having owned a '70 429 Torino GT and a '70 428 Cobra at different times. I do NOT miss the squeaking upper control arm bushings!
20240921_112615.jpg20240921_112633.jpg20240921_112651.jpg
Trucks category. All scales. The Caravan pick-up was something different. The AMT '78 Ford F-150 was impressive!
There were no entries in the Commercial Vehicle category.
20240921_112755.jpg20240921_112701.jpg20240921_112556.jpg
Armor and miscellaneous.

Watercraft:

My favorite entry in the "Patriotic" category. Virgil's Revell/Monogram 1/48 scale Miss America P-51D Mustang. The finish was extraordinary.

Awards, including the Don Long Memorial award. Don is responsible for helping many of the Blackhawk modelers get started and hone thier skills. Mrs. Long and her daughter presented Don's award to Donald (whose name last I don't recall). No so different from our own Gil Wheeler Judges Grand award.
20240921_135802.jpg20240921_135730.jpg20240921_135706.jpg20240921_135529.jpg20240921_140002.jpg
We (Judges) awarded the F-150 "Best of show" over all the other first place models. I will mention Judging. Doug Kolkmann made a grave error when he assigned Frank Miller and I as a judging team. The 2 biggest (?) model scofflaws in the room, together. Poor Doug! Frank made the notes about award winners. I offered to sell Doug the translation of Frank's "Scrawl of the Wild" notes but Doug declined. Bad choice, Mister Kolkmann. You chose unwisely.

About Awards:
It is customary and usual to announce the Modeler and then which of his models the first, second or third place award is for. A little more work by the registrar may have given young Doug the modeler's names that are customarily announced. As it was, for their second show, only the title of the Model was announced. This led to some confusion during the awards ceremony. This could have been a bigger problem if 4 or five of the same model had been entered in the contest.

Sweeps (Awarding the same modeler more than 1 award in the same category) were allowed. IPMS has no hard and fast rule about sweeps, but we usually don't allow that, to spread the awards out more evenly. Again, in the cozy smaller IPMS contest, this isn't a big deal, and every club can choose their own "Sweeps" Policy.
Like in Real Space this time, 1 modeler entered both 1/72 space shuttle models. Blue & Red, Bay-Bee! Or in the Watercraft category. Jose' Luis was awarded a First and Third award. Well done Jose', but you see what I mean.

Every club "Walks before they Run". Some more contest experience will certainly benefit the Blackhawks. Attitude is the most important thang, and these Men have absolutely the proper attitude! Bob Delaney is also an excellent reference point-man for what guidelines IPMS/USA may require. Other "old hands" Frank, Larry, myself are always happy to remember our humble contest beginnings and share our hard-won show experiences to aid "Younger" IPMS chapters.

Frank and I ragged poor Doug without mercy or propriety. This is also part of the hazing, UM! LEARNING process that comes with model contests. We ragged one another as well. So................

Oh! Hey, The Blackhawks had a club table! Displaying built models that had been awarded before. Have a look!

Duane's Easy-8 Sherman is well made! Tom's '29 (?) Ford wrecker is an eye-pleaser!
20240921_130720.jpg20240921_130742.jpg20240921_130753.jpg20240921_130759.jpg20240921_130814.jpg20240921_130819.jpg20240921_130823.jpg
I really liked Blackhawk club president Tom Piper's 1/24 Dodge Demon.

Doug's 1/72 VF-1 Wolfpack NK100 Tomcat was my favorite, but his Munster-mobile was really cool too! I wonder what kits these were built from?

In spite of the "speed-bumps", I thought the Blackhawk Modeler's Society did a fine job on their second contest. Frank and I had a GREAT time! Teresa raked in raffle prizes as usual, until we decided to give the the last 2 of 14 wins away.

"Rhino, what model kit was it you lacked the ability to continue Life without from the vintage Vet model wall?"
20240921_173515.jpg
Since you pried it out of me, this 1970 USS Brooke kit! The kit is complete and even the 54 year-old decals look good!
I await figures on contest entrants and model entries.

Thanks for playing model contest with me again!
