sombitch! I've run into that also Steve. Mine was a Microsoft branded camera, planned obsolesces comes from the marketting department.
Steve, I popped a few $$ a couple of years ago for a Logitech camera and added in cheap desktop stand as I didn't want it mounted on my monitor or anything. I also wanted something that would do 1080p with a decent frame rate. Mine is now at least 3 or 4 years old and it just works, no problems. I tend to stick with name brand stuff on peripherals like Logitech, Kensington, Samsung, etc. I don't remember what I paid, but it was a bit, but it just works, so it was worth it.
