As this is the time of year and you might be expecting packages, dont get lured into an email virus. I just received one which I found suspicious and checked up on it. More info can be found here with a shot that shows what the basic email looks like.

Stay safe my friends.
James

Thanks, James!

Crud like this is out there all the time, but this time of year it seems to be like ChickenMan!

Couple of new scams that we've been dealing with at work, and I have even gotten this at home.

Phone rings and ask to speak to me by name.

"This is Windows Tech support calling to let you know someone is attempting to install unauthorized files on your computer.'

First thing, I'm the guy who Tech Support calls when they can't fix it so WTF is this guy doing calling me?! :geek

Second, and important thing to remember, Tech Support NEVER calls you preemptively. You have to initiate that support call.

So I wanted to hear the sales pitch so I played along.

Long story short he took me to the Windows Events viewer and the Windows Administrative Events under Custom View. Now what this is it's a filter on all the event logs that are related to Administrative task that fail or generate a warning. EVERY computer has failed events and warnings, EVERY One has these. This Jackwagon told me these were the files that someone was trying to send to me. I knew better.

Still playing along, he wanted me to send those files to him. This is where the hook comes in. He directed me to a website with this weird address. I told him I was there and he ask me what I saw...I asked him what would he expect me to see? He said a pop up asking to install a utlitiy to upload the files to their servers.

I said, "You mean like a file someone would put on my computer to take control and hack other people's computers?" Then I asked how many people fall for this crap to which he started playing innocent. Said he's from "Windows Security". I said "Windows is not a company name, who do you work for?" Don't really matter what he said it would be a lie. At this point I hung up on him.

The SUMABITCH had the nerve to call me back and asked if I ran the file, that's whey I went redneck on him.

The second Scam we're dealing with is you get an email from ADT or some security group who threatens to disable your account if the bill is not brought up to date, the bill would be attached in a PDF file, but oddly enough the PDF file is in a ZIP file and it's an exe file when unzipped. We even have this stuff blocked on our AV scanner but I don't know how many people have disabled their AV to run the file because they are worried about the account being suspended. I had one I dealt with, asked him if he pays the bills, "No". Do you have ADT? "No". Did you read the email from our IT group warning about this scam? "No". :bang head

So folks, do your IT guy a favor, Run Chrome or Firefox with AdBlockPlus, don't open no attachments for shipping stuff, they send you numbers, not files. Don't open invoices (especially if you're not the one paying the bill) or run any file that some weird speaking guy phone tells you to run. And when in Doubt, Reboot....:geek:

I have a couple of idiot customers that has deposited money into my bank account at banks I dont have accounts at the moment.

Oh and the regular "You have won the Windows Lottery" one as Bob said Windows aint a company its mostly an operating system (and sometimes a language instruction company Just last week it made me fluent in swearing AGAIN)

Well you keep sending those emails about being a SA Prince and needing money to process people's transactions, what do you think they are going to do!? :rotf

every so often I get one of the "Lottery" or "banking scams." They are immediately erased.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone falls for this stuff anymore... but as P.T. Barnum said, there is a sucker born every minute and two to take him.

This reminds me of a story the IT guy a couple jobs back told me.

It was when the "Anna kournikova" virus was going around. It said to open the attachment in the email to see a hot pic of AK. So this idiot at work opened it and it apparently managed to crash the entire network, which took the IT guy a couple days to fix. A few days after the network was fixed, it went down again b/c of the same virus. It got traced back to the same guy who did it the first time, and the IT guy asked him why he did it, and his response was b/c he hadn't been able to see the picture the first time. I about fell out of my chair when he told me that story.

LOL shows how stupid people are.

I know my 'puter and what is running on it very well. Most AV programs trash how my machine works so I don't run them. The only time I ever had a malware hit, I disabled it manually and was able to completely shut it down. It was one of those "Your computer is infected you need to buy this program to clean it" got it all disabled but then had to buy a "REAL" anti-virus to clean the garbage off.

Shouldn't have had to buy anything to clear that Paul, may I suggest http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ Oops, let a trade secret out...

CCleaner is another good utlity to use to clean up the crap, that's what it stands for Crap Cleaner. :rotf

Never heard of this Dave, dloading it now to see how it runs. Hope I don't get an influx of Nigerian Prince emails trying to sell the Neiman Markus chocolate cookie recipe.

Dr Web Cureit works like the online virus checks BUT without the hours and hours of wayting while it does an real deep virus scan. Hell they even get rid of some microsoft stuff that used to make my machine just a bit slower. :geek

Only problem is you have to DL the whole thing everytime to get the newest anti virus stuff BUT as I say once a month that is not such a big problem

There was a time when I used a little freebe AV program that could be shut down so it wouldn't clog resources. Norton is almost worse than some of the viruses it is supposed to protect from and you can't shut it down.

Currently viruses are not an issue, have no internet at home. There are no open DSL ports in my area, and the local cable company is a real PITA to deal with.

I absolutely hate Norton AV. The program just sucks. I've always found it incredibly difficult, it not almost down right impossible, to make setting changes and exceptions & such. My opinion has always been its Idiot Proof, and if you can turn on the computer, then your an idiot.

I've been using CCleaner for awhile now. Love that program. I also use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware about once a week. Since I've begun to use those programs I've not had any issues at all. We also have Avast that runs a full scan at night every few days. Thebiggest problem is keep Sarah from downloading some stupid free program that always contains a ton of bloatware :bang head
