Chuck Sterns Has Passed Away

After a lengthy battle, Chuck Sterns has passed away. Chuck was a member of the IPMS Plastic Surgeons, the Hawkeye Modelers and was a commissioned artist for the Iowa Air National Guard. Chuck touched the lives of many without realizing the depth and breadth of his influence and will be greatly missed. Fair winds and following seas, Master Sterns! :drinks

It should also be noted that Chuck was one of the founding members of both of those IPMS clubs, as well as being a plank owner with IPMS USA. Chuck also did box artwork for Glencoe Models and AMT, as well as several pieces for Over the Front magazine.

Some of Chuck's work was on one of the AMT 1/72 A-7D Corsair boxes, several of the Glencoe WWI models, and he had built the mode featured on the side of the original release of the Italeri 1/72 TU-22 Blinder. Funny story on this one, Italeri sent him the test kit to build up, and instead, he sent back pictures of the scratchbuild Blinder he had in his display case.

Chuck was an amazing man, and a very patient mentor. Everything I know about building aircraft models and detailing them, I learned from him. My 1/72 AJ-1 Savage that won a 2nd place this last year at IPMS Nationals, was actually a model Chuck started years ago and was unable to finish. He had done the assembly, and I completed the final paint and detail work. Chuck introduced me to vacuum-formed kits, resin kits, and scratchbuilding details.

I have several of his models here in my own case, and I will try to get pictures and post them up here.

As promised, here is some of the amazing work Chuck has done over the years.

Monogram 1/48 F-105D. Chuck redid the panel lines, added detail to the landing gear, and scratchbuilt most of the cockpit.

Academy [?] 1/48 F-84G Iowa Air National Guard. This one is entirely covered in foil. Chuck masked the side stripes and hand painted the IANG emblem. Vacuum-formed canopy and a bunch of scratchbuilt details.

A pair of Ace 1/72 Guardians [AF-2S & AF-2W Hunter/Killer] Chuck built the Hunter, I built the Killer.

Three models that Chuck started, but due to his health was unable to finish. I had the honor of finishing these up.
Vacuum-formed 1/72 AJ-1 Savage [Chuck scratch built the cockpit and did the primary assembly]

1/72 F-CK-1 Ching Kuo. Chuck did the build, I did the paint.

1/72 HH-34B Huskie Chuck did the build, combining two kits and scratchbuilt details. I painted.
