BLINDERS

If it's on sprues and in a box, it has my attention! I've got a 1/72 U-Boot in my bathroom over the tub and some other subs in the stash. I have a car kit (my old Spyder), and well as the odd truck, MRAP or staff car. Shiny cars (and planes) worry me! I've got some tanks and related kits. I can't make it by the ship displays at shows- so amazing! I feel there's a 1/200 Arizona or 1/144 Fletcher in my future. I try to breeze past the car displays, but they're always too darn beautifully built and finished- and boy, do we have the car builders in SoCal! Sci-fi, monsters, anime cuties- got 'em in the stash. Even those military train kits and civilian trolleys have my eye. I do prefer 1/48. but have some 1/72 1nd 1/32 as well. Of course, there are some kits I've looked at for years and have never been tempted to buy, but hey, not everything appeals to everybody!

As far as the good folk who come here to share in this broad-spectrum hobby are all fine by me. Come by for a cold one any ol' time! :drinks

1:72 sub in the tub, don't leave much room for your bath... I use to play with my U.S.S. North Carolina in the bath but it and I were much smaller!

Did you say cold one? :drinks :beer

Well, I tend to think of it more as focus rather than blinders. I like armor and ships but planes are my focus so I don't spend a lot of time looking at other things. I do occasionally build a soft skin but have given up on ships as ones in a scale large enough for me to work on comfortably are too large to display. Like Phil I have a hard time keeping up with just planes. May sound like heresy but I belong to and frequent a half dozen other sites, some predominately aircraft related and some mixed like here. I like fine modeling and do look at armor and ship topics but seldom post responses. The above covers my plastic modeling hobby. I'm also deeply involved in model railroading. I model in 1/24 and 1/22.5 scales, two of several scales commonly referred to as "G" scale trains. Because of their size they can be quite pricy so I do a lot of scratch building and kit bashing. This also eats a lot of my time and there are forums that cover this aspect of the hobby too. Because of the size my layout is outdoors so it's essentially a fair weather hobby and I tend to do most of my plastic model building during the winter or extremely hot periods in the summer. I think my hobby diversification is great enough that I don't need to expand any further. I think it safe to say I'll not live long enough to build every aircraft kit I would like to so don't feel obligated to pursue others else where. If this blinds me to techniques and superior workmanship, so be it.

That's why I usually navigate through the first Forum tab instead of by individual groups, you get to see what's new regardless of topic.

It's all art and each genre seems to bring out a certain specialty of talent (at least from my perspective):

Armor leans toward detail and weather.
AC is about seams, detail and finish.
Auto is about the pristine finish.
Figures are all sculpture and paint.
Ships are a hybrid of Armor and AC.
Sci Fi is is a hybrid of all or none of the above.

We can all learn from each of those, If not, what's the point?

I look at a lot of stuff, but I may not comment, which isn't cool, but it's by necessity. If someone took the effort to post, I could at least acknowledge it but for some reason, I balk at a simple 'attaboy' and usually don't have the time to compose a response worthy of the post. I usually sneak in a few minutes here and there during the day to check out what's going on. I could easily spend a few hours a day here, but I can't.

Same here.

If I can't come up with something worthwhile to write, and worthwhile for you to read I simply move on. It's not laziness, it's not selfishness, it's not because I don't like you or your work, it's really done out of respect to be honest. If I have nothing worth saying, I say nothing..

^ This too.

i am at fault in a big way for not following up with posts on the builds that i look at. i spend alot of time, read way too much, working through the forums i belong to. i spend a ton of time gawking at the workmanship and talent shown by so many modelers. to be honest most of the time if i post it is two or three days after i initially looked at the work. in a way i feel i have overstretched myself forum wise. in my defense i really could not help myself. i browse the forums and then see a build or two that really compel me to become a member and that adds to the number of forums that i end up looking at. it is a horrible cycle and one that i seem to be trapped in.

rest assured though. i check out most of the subforums. figures and scifi are ones that i tend to go to rarely but there are times that i will follow along with a build because it is just way too cool.

I do take a look at other items, but I dont have the time or the knowledge to respond to everything.
Maybe a kind of Facebook "Like" would be nice, even if you dont login, so for any visitor ?

That being said, there are wonderful builds around here in every genre.

And yes, I would like to build about everything, but its simply to much, I have to stick to my own subjects, those take up a men's life already.

But cheers to every modeler here, you are ok (y)

I don't know if we get the true question of the topic :hmmm

The model world isn't about comment in foruns, build in ours workbenchs, go to Opens.
But learn and teaching, and before all the friendship between modelers! (y)
It's how I became part of this family. I do look at all subjects of modelling, we can always learn and adapt a technique or tool to our models or workbench. Here at Brazil we've very little options about modelling, so we live to improvise. The internet help a lot, but sometimes the cost of products, essentially the shipping make it sometimes this become not a option. So I'd to hunt another way, thats help the creativity :S or get lazy too

Well another good source are the books and magazines about modelling...
I always that possible buy some issues, I realy like Airfix Model World, Scale Model Addict, Military Illustrated Modeller, and that special how to build or guides like Scale Modelling Step-by-step from AMW.
This things always help to learn something new or refresh something lost in time or change that bad habits
I take a note from a publication:
I mention the latter because even old-hands can pick up bad or unproductive habits and forget the basics.
by Chris Clifford editor of AMWS_Scale_Modelling_Step-By-Step

Well thats my 2-cents.

Cheers and happy modelling! :drinks

We've looked into that a couple of times, I even looked again this afternoon. Nothing out there for our forum system other than the "Thanks" button.

I can understand many of you not having time to comment on each and every post or thread. I'm lucky in that in the work I do I can keep an eye on the forum and see most everything as it comes in, I may not have much to say about something but i'll give a (y) or :pilot just to say, well I guess Attaboy. Personally I'm not oppose to Attaboys, I hope the folks don't mind an Attaboy. I think it let's the folks who take time to post up progress know someone took a look and didn't see anything wrong and really had nothing else to comment on. If they are doing something something I've never seen I'll ask what's up with that. I could post nothing, no comment, guess that would be neutral, the person posting wouldn't know if they are wrong, right or whatever. Neutral may not be bad but it's not good either, is it? I just want to give the person posting reassurance that someone appreciates their effort to share. Again, maybe the "Thanks" is enough?

One thing I hate to see is a progress post that doesn't have any comments on it. Sure everyone could have looked in and saw the progress, progress is good so no comments. But what if the person who posted is looking for that positive feedback? They may think that if they get nothing then why bother posting? They may not think about the view count, I know some of you do and make note of what the count is when you post.

My take on it is if someone take the time to post up a progress report I can take a couple of seconds to say thanks in some way. Maybe we cam use the "Thanks" button in that same way.

Art, I'm pretty sure Terry's original intent was pointing out that modeling is modeling, regardless of the genera you most identify with. Question being, do you look out side your realm to see what others are doing? Jeff summed it up best

I completely agree, that's why I feel like a heal when I don't post a reply. I know it's stupid, but I feel like if I give a thumbs up to every thread I read, but then write a reply to some, it's as if I'm short changing the ones I don't write on or that they're not as good.

That said, I really appreciate any and all replies to my threads, which means it really makes no sense. I'm a member of a RC tank forum and there will literally be 500 views of a post with no replies. It's like no one wants to converse at all. It takes a lot of getting used to coming from static forums where it's really about conversation.

If I was at a show with you guys, I'd spend hours talking to you about each and every detail of your builds, regardless of the subject or my interest area. But that would be based on the luxury of time set aside for it. The internet is so wide, my attention gets pulled in too many directions and I only commit mere moments to any one subject.

Totally understand. That's why I wrote that "I can take a couple of seconds to reply", because frankly, I do have the time. I don't cruse any other forums (long story) I just hunker down here trying to take care of things. I do tier2/3 tech support and spend most of my day in front of 3 computer screens, I generally have at least one screen dedicated to goofin off...:rotf

No one should feel like a heal because we all have our own issues and time constraints, hell I appreciate everyone sharing what they can.

I agree! Nothing better to say ;)

I agree in part here MP, because the biggest part of the post on 3 pages, was about post a answer or not and the motive for it. And who answer "do you look out side your realm to see what others are doing?", please I don't want to knock nobody, but answer that question don't mean you have to post in every topic in the forum or not....

Exactly right Art. :coolio

Fellas I'm sorry I got rough with you, but Patton said: "Give it to them loud and dirty then they will pay attention." There is no one here I don't like and consider all of you friends, but when I see some threads getting lots of attention while others get very little I become concerned. I just wanted to kick the site in the pants and remind everyone not to get stuck in a rut. An "attaboy" here and there might make the difference to someone who needs a little encouragement. Most people just want to feel like they belong and comments will do that better then all the views in the world.

Model on!!

Terry (y)

Well I do build in a few different catagories,Planes,Armor,Ships, and Figures, but I don't consider each a seperate community,I notice that many cross over to different places.I enjoy a good dio or a nice Star Trek or Star Wars subject also although I don't build these things
