I look at some of these and really feel for these folks.
You see these grouping of metals and a short history. Each one of these heros had stores. They didn't just hand out those things for showing up on time.
The first two in the group are for the Second Boer War, 1899-1902. The first is the Queen's South Africa Medal, the clasps recognizing campaigns he was in. The second is the King's South Africa Medal, the clasps recognizing the years of service in South Africa. The third is the 1914 Star, also known as the Mons Star, for service in France or Belgium between August and November 1914. The fourth is the British War medal for service between 1914 and 1920. The last is the Allied Victory Medal.

My maternal grandfather's medals are the 1914-15 Star for service in France or Belgium between August 1914 and Dec 1915. Its the same as the Mons Star with a different date on the central scroll. He also has the War Medal and Victory Medal.

My paternal grandfather would of had the War and Victory Medals along with a wound stripe for wounds received at Vimy Ridge. But all his medals along with those of his brother-in-law from his service in the RNWMP, Saskatchewan and Alberta Provincial Police, RFC/RAF in WW 1 and RCAF in WW 2 disappeared when he moved into a Veteran's Home. Dad wasn't impressed by his mother's side of the family who said they would take care of his things when he moved out of his house.

Cheers,
RichB
