Are we just reliving our childhood?

In a good way I mean... B)

There was always a bit of that in modeling as an adult, but the tools, techniques, research, AM, etc. all bring it to a completely different level. A Tamiya Corsair is a different species than the Monogram I built as a kid.

But, this past week I picked up a few kits that can't fall into the above example in any way, shape or form, yet I'm absolutely giddy about them, even though I paid 33 times the price it was in 1964.

I bought the Aurora Monsters: The Creature, Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Hunchback as well as the Munster's Coach and Grandpa's Dragula.

There are outstanding updates to the monster kits, but I wanted to old, clunky, tired ones.

Of course, I will build them with every ounce of adult ability I can muster and unless I go out and by an old card table and Pactra paints, I won't be recreating my childhood build, but I can honestly say I'm more enthused to build these than anything in recent memory.

Short answer...yes.

I told someone the other day that I'm still doing this because I can't afford a 1967 Firebird to rebuild. That and it's a good escape for me to get in the garage and hunker down on something (while projects go undone in the house :frantic)

I've done kits in my adult life that I would never had done when I was a kid, spent money on them the same way. I have an upper limit on what I will spend but if I ever get tempted....I'll have to think hard on it.

Nope and they are not toys either.

They are an excersise in creativity and a good substitute for my love of real airplanes .

Besides I still remember saving pennies to buy that really expensive 1.49 $ Monogram kit back then .

I believe, that as I age, see an increase (hopefully) in disposable income, and deal with the complexites of what others expect "Being Grown" up SHOULD be, I hearken back to a simpler carefree time, and revisit my beloved play time.

I was commissioned "Man-of-the-House" at 12. I will NOT whine here about how hard life is. Duty called and I did my chubby, bumbling, best. In the cyclical nature of Life, "Childhood" is NOW. Mortgage paid off, Kids gone, job secure, prescriptions to take. (you younger Men will find out soon enough!) Enjoy yourself!

Nostalgia? Perhaps. I just rounded out my childhood play-things collection with a 1957 Monogram 1/48 Republic P-47D Thunderbolt kit. Remember how much fun it was to put them together, so you could escort Col. Savage's TV B-17's on their Mission over the basement Reich? (did you fly them around the yard? I have!) As my Academy 1/48 P-47D patiently languishes, awaiting further attention.

I say BRAVO! Buy the happy Models & Stuff! If you need help talking yourself into buying an old model kit, let me know! :gogo I'm REALLY GOOD AT IT! :yipee

I'd be lying if I said no. :rotf

I bought a 1/48 Monogram A-10 at the model show earlier this year simply on the nostalgia of having built one in my childhood...and the fact they would fly right over the top of my house! :eek:hmy: :pilot

OK, if you built an A-10 as a kid, your still a kid!!! We had the Aurora kits that were colored plastic ie the Hellcat was lt. blue, FW-190 was black, the Me-109 was dark red, the Zero was yellow. It wasn't till the 70's that I found out different about the Zero. And we did fly them allover the neighborhood. This was around 1958. almost all of my coworkers are old enough to be my kids and don't even know who the "Flying Tigers" were. It's a sad commentary. :eek:ldguy Gary

I don't think so, but I may be wrong. My childhood wasn't so great so reliving it is not something I want to do. OTOH...I am now able to build models and create items I could not before, both from the standpoint of moo-lah and resources, so maybe I am not so much reliving it...but finally living it out as I wanted it to be!

Make sense?

Neat pics! remember the WW1 Tri=plane that was red plastic? I think it too was Aurora!

Good point . I have no problem identifying with most of those comments :good:

Reliving my childhood ... That's it I'm just doing it with some money for Kits now ... sure you can buy a $10.00 one but a $75 dollar one is a lot better quality. Now If your one who's says I can fix that, more power to you ... resin costs $$$ I've found out, PE also ... The upgrade for a USS Texas ($115) costs more than the Kit ... so If your building Museum Quality be prepared to either work many hours or spend the Bucks and work less. On my failed CSS Henley, the resin was very poor needs lots of work and putty but since I missed the campaign. It will make a good Dio, that I'm kicking around. Bottom line have fun and go kick a can down the street .... :woohoo:

I'd have to say no. My main focus as a kid was automobiles, and really I bought anything that was available to me. Now, it feels like more of an actual hobby than just playing around, a chance for some creativity that I don't get to do much in the day to day routine (unless you include making little clay animals with my daughters)! :D

I think like MP said, can't afford or have the space for that old car to fix up. This is cheaper, quieter and gives me a good chance to relax and reflect on other things.

Harrumph Gentlemen!! :v
The eternal child hopefully resides in all of us. To some degree.
What it is.
What it shall be.
What it was.

I still have my old red-molded Revell 1/72 Red Baron Fokker Tri-plane. :pilot
