airbrush practice: M7 Priest

Hi all,

Before starting on a new big project, I felt I needed some more airbrush practice.
Remember I have it for just a few months.

So I picked the old M7 Priest from Italeri which has some nice surfaces.
Now Italeri's have some pro's and some contra's.

Pro:
- Wide range of rare models no one else has. Another M7 is only recently on the market from Academy. And I heard it
is not that much better
- Very crispy detail, famous for that, can compare with the best nowadays.
I heard the 105 mm gun is still the best around.
- Cheap. Got this one for 10 bucks, try that with a Dragon or Tamiya !

Contra:
- Sinkmarks all over the place, even on the small parts, often right in sight.
Some are very hard to remove.
- Lousy fit on some places. Fortunately there are some build reviews online, so I was alert for most traps.
But putty and styrene sheet are crucial.

I builded OOTB, only the tracks had to be replaced. They were of the old, stiff type, impossible to handle.
Replaced them with Tamiya duckbills with a smooth fit.

Im aware of some not-so-good things, like the baskets on the motordeck who are massive
instead of mesh. And the decals are so thick you can still see the outlines. And some other minor points.
Used the old Italeri-guy which came along, because I dont have a decent crew right now.

But main goal was not to build a perfect vehicle, but to play with shades, color modulation,
and dust by airbrush.
Not much rust, but dusty like on a warm august day.
Everything was done with Vallejo acryls. Sand pigments will be added later on a ground.

As a last word I have to say that the vehicle looks somehow more grey then in reality.
It is really light olive-drab !

Here the pics, Im open for any comments, still in the learning stage !

Thanks for watching !

Not bad at all for such an old kit! (y) (y) (y)

Really like the subtle highlights on the olivedrab color.

Would like to see what you have done on the next Bouwgroep Limburg meeting. :)

You have certainly achieved some good shading there my friend (y) (y) (y)

PS Dragon have recently brought out some very good M7s over the past few months although theres till some issues even with those kits

I myself, in the past, have built about 3 Italeri M7s and with a bit of work they can be quite nice :)

The above pics are there just purely as an example of upgrading-ish a what was a quite poor kit
I didnt get that right either as the transmission cover is a late while I tried to depict a mid production vehicle,...oh well.

back to your M7, Willem, I think you have painted that up very nicely and I like the fighting compartment and i think you have achieved that dusty effect extremely well !!

Cant wait to see more and whats the big project coming up ?

A. :D

Hi Andy,

I can see you are a M7 specialist !
And I noticed that you added many extra's, like it was done in the field.
Nice !! Love it (y)

You are right, if you spend time and effort, it is a good kit, mainly for its detailling.
One day, when I put it in a scene, I might do some extra work on it, and get a decent crew.

Keep on building,

Willem

Nice job Willem, I also have been playing with the painting techniques in stead of trying to make super detailed construction. One thing I've picked up is the subtle tone changes that you can see in the natural light may be lost in digital images. I can see what you've done here and it looks good, but wonder if it's not too subtle for imaging.

The Dusting is great! (y)

Nice looking M-7 there dude. I'd say the airbrush practice went by very well and you should be good for the next project.
