88mm FLAK 37 mit Behelfslafette

Beautiful work. I'm really impressed with the way the balsa planks came out...no fuzzy's :D Superb job (y)

Hello all !

This week saw not much action on the Flak front, but let me share it with you anyway.

To finish the base there was only one thing left to do: detailing the ammo crates and shells.

The AFV Club 88 mm brass shells are really top of the bill but to get a far more realistic look I kind of took the shine away by spraying them with matt varnish and then giving them a light wash. Dirtied them a little so they blended more into the groundwork.

The crates are also by AFV club and are paintied using Vallejo acrylics. They look much better than the ones provided in the Dragon kit.

Thanks to the excellent reference picture posted on this thread by Saùl Garcia, I was able to paint some of the shells looking anodized. I think it creates more interest to alter the appearance of the spent shell cases.

To get the anodized look I first primed them black and misted them with a warm light grey, matt varnish and a light wash, the same way as the brass ones
To highlight the details I drybrushed them with a mixture of light grey oil paint and Tamiya X-11 chrome silver.

Thanks again, Saùl !!!

And last but not least I have given This Charming Man a first coat of paint, hope to start the flesh parts next week!

Thank you for looking !!!

It looks real good? Did you try to heat damage the edges of the spent shells? I sometimes do this with the brass shells before adding the photo-etched end caps. In some cases, I get nice color striations emulating heated metal while other times it does not change color at all.

Those anodized shells look the part!

That seems like a very good idea, Saùl. I got to keep that in mind for the next time because my shells are already glued to the surface ! :bang head

Thank you for the advice !

I thought that you may have tried it and did not get results as sometimes happens to me.

Hi all,

After spending a long time with 'This Charming Man' I got tired of him and got back to painting the FLAK.

I decided to give it a faint green 'spiderweb' camo scheme. Here's a pic of the flak paint job before the real job of weathering

begins. Hope to be starting that stage soon.

I have the same kit- have yet to begin but I really like the hydraulic tubing and that shield on yours. Hopefully mine will turn out nearly this clean.

I'm looking for that shield now- Aber has everything (3.7 mm ect) including barrels, but none for that sheild set for the 88 Flak 37- do you still have that Aber model #? Thanks CR
