DH 103 Hornet F1
65(F) Squadron, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, 1948
PX252 was the personal aircraft of the CO, Sqn Ldr Charlton 'Wag' Haw. These markings weren't carried very long as, according the story, the AOC 12 Group ordered them removed.
Sqn Ldr Haw joined the RAFVR in Feb 1939. He joined 504 Sqn in Jun 1940 as a Sergeant Pilot and gained one confirmed Bf110. In Jul 1941 A Flt of 504 Sqn was reformed as 81 Sqn and embarked for the Soviet Union in September. Sqn Ldr Haw had 3 confirmed BF109's (and the 100 rouble per kill reward) while flying operations from Vaenga.
Returning to the UK in November, 81 Sqn re-equipped with Spitfire V's. He received his commission in Mar 1942, posted briefly back to 504 Sqn and then to 122 Sqn. In Feb 1943 he was given command of 611 Sqn. In Apr he was sent on a series of factory tours before joining the Fighter Leaders School. In Nov he assumed command of 129 Sqn. In Jul 1944 he returned to the Fighter Leaders School. He commanded 65 Sqn from 1946 to 1948. He retired in 1951.
He finished the war with 5 confirmed kills and was awarded the DFM (as a Sgt Pilot), DFC, The Order of Lenin (1 of 4 RAF pilots) and Russian Victory Medal. He passed away in Dec 1993.

The build went well. Fit was good. The cockpit is simplified but I think CMK has an update set for it. The seat is the biggest disappointment and I used a spare Spitfire seat as the real seats are very similar. I replaced the smooth wheels with some resin block tread wheels. The block tread was used on aircraft operating from paved runways.

What a beautiful collection so far, congratulations to all of you. I love the weathering on the Hurricane.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I
19 Squadron, RAF Duxford, Cambridgeshire
October 1938 - August 1939
The Spitfire entered RAF service with 19 Sqn in August 1938. It was originally planned that 41 Sqn at RAF Catterick would receive the first Spitfires, but after a series of landing accidents at smaller airfields following the Hurricanes introduction earlier in the year, 19 Sqn was chosen at the much larger airfield at Duxford.
The Munich Crisis saw the introduction of this marking scheme and it was carried until the start of the war in September 1939 when underwing roundels were reintroduced and squadron code letters were changed (19 Sqn changed to QV and they carried them for the remainder of the war).
