DAK with the Doc

Tossing out an idea

I don't know whether or not they were actually used in Africa, but it's WW2 German...good enough for me.

:blink

That's the spirit, this is more for the experience and learning how to do DAK colors than anything.

I've always question armor guys about how can you build up the entire model THEN paint it. I did that Greyhound the other week and saw how to do it. Even in 1:48 it wasn' that hard to paint the tools once in place. I mean after all, we paint freakin IP in the cockpit right?! :v

So for in the unlikely event I can find the time to prep a kit, what stage would it need to be built to? I'm assuming accessories/small weapons (that are not tank color) would be left off. But what about tracks? I'm assuming they'd be assembled, but left off until the hull is painted.

Sorry for the newb questions. I've never done an armor kit before so I'm not really familiar w/ what might be some of the standard assembly/paint procedures and would hate to back myself into a corner before the real sessions begin.

I've got a Bergepanzer Tiger 1 I could use. I don't know whether or not they were actually used in Africa, but it's WW2 German...good enough for me.

I generally install all the tools before painting, Track/ sometimes if I’m using metal tracks I’ll leave them off to the end if I’m using Lincoln Lane I actually build the whole suspension so can be removed from the h I generally install all the tools before painting, track sometimes if I’m using metal tracks I’ll leave them off to the end if I’m using Link and length I actually build the whole suspension so it can be removed from the hull and painted separately.

This gives me a reason to grab one of the new DAK tigers. So we are to build and then follow along the painting of the kit? That sounds like fun.

Was considering jumping in on this as I have a PzkwIII that would be part of a dio I want to build, BUT!

As of June 1 I will be at Wonderfest and then starting a different project. I will be watching closely though.

I have a bunch of Dragon's Panzer IIIs in storage might grab one out for this and I have the Dragon Panzer IV kit too. (I did not like the engineering of it)

I do have this kit started, mainly filling the bunch out marks. I will see if I can get it up and running again could be the easiest for me to get to paint stage.

I just might order a Tamiya Panzer IV D to play with. :idonno I can see myself getting track and PE etc. so I could get into a time trouble :facepalm

Hey John...

With AMPS Nationals coming up and thus access to vendors with paint that I don't normally have here in the Saratoga area, can you give us a heads up on what sorts of colors we should have access to so we can follow your methods?

I am going to be using mainly Tamiya paints for this project. I will prime with MIG Ammo Grey Primer.

Then I will base coat with XF-63, then post shading with XF-54, then XF-54 mixed with XF-55.

Then an application of hairspray (Tresemme) then a custom mix to get RAL 8020 (Desert Brown) XF-15:5 and XF-64:2 then post shading by adding XF-2.

I hope this helps.

This is the dio I have had in mind. I believe it is Rommel standing up on the tank. Not quite sure what version Panzer-III it is but seems to be an early one or one with the minimal turret.

One of the reasons I am going to Wonderfest is to learn about some new paints. These are mainly used for figures, but they are made in the US and the company is adding more colors all the time. I have signed up for a class on Friday before and will be doing greyscale but using the paints in my airbrushes.

Here is a link to the paints: Garage Kits USA Paints

I have seen some fabulous paintwork done with these paints and will be trying them out with instruction May 31. I will let you all know how they go.

Here are a couple of 1/6th scale figs painted with these paints. I have the Dorthy fig and will be painting her up soon.

Those figures are kewl - who carries them? I cannot wait to hear about the paints.

The Pz III is a J, with a short 50mm.

Those figures are also made by the company that makes the paints. Go check out the site there is some fantastic stuff on there.

Here is the direct link to Denizens of Zo

Here is a link to the other figure set they have, the Halloween Nightmares.

The photos really don't do the quality of the paintwork on these figures justice.
