Yet another USMC Sherman from Iwo Jima.

I am building the third and final USMC Sherman from Iwo Jima. I have already built a tank from the 3rd and 4th Battalion so this will be "Davy Jones" from the 5th Tank Battalion.

I began with the venerable Tamiya M4A3, and started scratch building. I used 28 ga wire for the 17 penny nails welded to the hatches, Milliput for the sandbags, basswood for the sponson armor, and bridal tule for the wire mesh.

Color is a Tamiya XF 73 base which gives a good faded green look. The red Brown camo, yes it's red brown, is Lifecolour "RotBraun". It looks pink due to the flourescent light I used.

Those represent the nails welded to the hatches. The nails were intended to give some stand off protection against satchel charges and anti tank mines. The 3rd Battalion used hardly any additional armor, and the 4th Battalion used wire mesh cages welded to the hatches.

I'm crosseyed dealing with those bits of wire, but I like the effect.

Even with the grandchildren visiting I accomplished quite a bit. I weathered with oils and drybrushed with enamel. Davy is up on his wheels so it was time for the bogie "armor" I used stir sticks from a well known coffee chain to replicate the wood planks on the bogies.

G-man i've seen it all now. Stir stick armor.
What were they thinking?
I would bet the same guy gave those porcupines a hitch too. :rotf

Nice work fellow

Ok I am now 95% finished with Davy Jones. Some odds and ends, an antenna, and I'll call him complete.
