Why aren't you building what you "really" want to?

Great ideas! You could do the MASH in smaller sections that could be put together. Make the "Swamp" and then move to another part of the camp. That way you can work toward the finished project.

That's the general construction concept I've got rolling around in my head for the carrier deck sections to display the CVW-11 airwing. I'm figuring 2-3 aircraft per base. Then be able to tie all the bases together to give the appearance of a larger chunk of deck.

Wow Terry - way to get deep! :rotf

But honestly, its a fantastic question, one that caused me to lose a little sleep last night wondering, just why I haven't built what I want to build. :hmmm

I guess to start off, Just like Old Dog said - everything in my stash, which has grown to more then 100 kits (don't tell my wife!), are there because I want to build them for some reason or another. But some of them are there for a specific purpose. These are the things that I am inspired to build if you will, and well that list is much smaller. Just like Christian said, the campaigns have been a bit of a distraction, but I mean that in a good way, just wish I could finish more then I do.

So here's the list of what I want to do, and why:
1. F-14, specifically from VF-213. First off - I was a 12 year old kid when a little movie staring the F-14 came out. She's my first love. :drool And why VF-213? They where the first tactical aircraft over Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks. To me - that's inspiration enough.
2. Hasegawa F-4J backdated to a F-4B. This would be my first real conversion of a kit. A big milestone to me, in my growth in the hobby.
3. 1/32 Ho-229. This is just an amazing kit of an amazing aircraft that was way ahead of its time
4. This picture, because it would be fantastic as a dio:
01b.jpg

5. A Full Resin kit
6. A modern armor diorama that that I have been thinking about for 20+ years. There are so many fantastic builds of dios and vignettes that I really just want to do one myself.

And there are a couple of others, that I didn't list here...

So why haven't I even started any of these? That's really the question. I mean in every case I have everything I need for these builds. All the aftermarket and the kits, etc. So why haven't I done any of these? Well first of all, I keep finding other things that I want to build. Either a campaign or some other source of inspiration comes along and I just put these builds back on the shelf. Also, every one of these is a pretty ambitious build for one reason or another. Lastly is honestly just fear. Fear that I'll mess it up or it won't turn out as well as they look in my minds eye.

So there it is. My rambling confession of sorts. Terry - thanks for bringing this up, and at a crucial time as well. I am just about done with my P-47 build, and while I have a lot of half-started kits on the shelf of doom, I think I am going to do what we should all be doing. And build one of those inspired builds. After all - this is a hobby, not a job! :ro:

So here's a question... Since all of these are reason enough to get running, what does the community at large want to see? Help me decide!

BINGO! By George I think he's got! Just the kind of thoughtful reply I was looking for. :drinks You took a look inside and that is where inspiration comes from. If you want my opinion do the Horton. Plan it out and take your time and when you get stuck work on some thing else for day or two. Put the problem to the gang here and maybe we can work it out together. I think the first hurdle is that we just need to open the box turn to step 1 and go to work.

1/48 scale decals for VF-213 are pretty easy to find...at least compared to 1/72. Ask me how I know. :bang head

So hopefully it's a 1/48 in your stash. If not, let me know and I'll keep my eyes open for a second set of 1/72 in my search for mine. :drinks

Oh, and AMK is on track to release the first of their F-14 series (1/48) later this year. And if the recent release of the MiG-31 is any indication to the quality of the kit...it's going to be amazing! :drool

Ahhh, nothing like the old Tom Cruse "Top Gun" movie. Danger Zone!

Hey Terrry, What would you call a 32" long 25 pound model of this?

Seems to me that is building what I really want to.

Thanks for the input Helios, yes its 1/48th. Hasagawa kit to be specific. Also have two sets of decals, one of which are the two bobs decals with all the mission markings. Plus resin engines, cockpit, OEF/OIF update set, wheels.... yeah - if they make it I pretty much got it...

Here was my one problem with this kit. I want to build it chained to the carrier deck, but I have no idea where to start with the carrier deck. I'll need some help there. Not insurmountable but....

Oh crap - making excuses again!

I do look at this kit like once a week... :love

Lets get a consensus from the group and then I'll decide. :yipee

I'm right there with you. I've got a couple ideas though..... :hmmm

Well I will say this. After signing up for a bunch of group builds I have to say that finishing them was a huge chore and not finishing some of them made me feel like a total jerk. Just a personal thing I guess. What it made me realize though is what am I doing this hobby for? Who am I building for? What am I even doing? Oh yeah this is supposed to be fun for me! So I finished 4 builds last year at my leisure and it felt great. This year my plan is more of the same. I'm going to build what I want and when I want to and on my time schedule. I guess I just never figured this out before but building models shouldn't stress you out. :facepalm

I agree woth you Adam. At this point I use the group builds to help decide what (of the stuff I want to build) to build next. Thus the Arizona is getting built, and a couple of tanks.

Hate it when a kit is seeiously wrong on something as the Trumpeter Ju87A kit is on a number of things. Makes me tend to slide kits like that to the side. :bang head

It is one thing to fix something due to molding limitations,or add some extra finer detail. It is another where it is just buggered up wrong. Hate that! :smack

I seriously splurged to get a worthwhile model of something I wanted since I was a child I got myself the Bandai Millenium falcon.

But my dreambuilds I will still say is a vietnam era F4E or a really nice looking F-16

Ha, that idea has really been tickling my mind as of late :idonno Of course it could never be in tiny scale . Maybe before too much longer .

Adam, you just found out what I have been trying to convey for several years now .

It's supposed to be fun , not a chore ...
