WHAT NON MODELERS SAY ABOUT MODELING AND MODELERS

All through my life, no matter what the discipline of art; painting, sculpture, effects makeup, some bystander would remark that they don't understand how I can do that. I usually respond that I don't understand how they can't.

Art is everywhere, whatever medium, we can't be responsible for those minds that can't see that.

My Dad always used to say to me as an older teenager.
" When are you going to grow out of that stuff??' and
'aren't you a bit old for toys?

He never seemed to understand the artistic side to modelling, especially dioramas.

Even my best friend tries to make out that he doesn't see it as weird but lets it slip every now and then when I go to a model show. He usually makes comments such as ' shouldn't you be dressed a little weirder than that?' or hints that we are all borderline pedophiles.

I think it threatens the 'macho male' thing.

Shalom.

I was very lucky. My mother would often buy me a kit to build when we went to visit her parents. Sometimes she'd get a bit frustrated about me wanting to build a model instead of hanging with the neighbours' kids. My grand dad told her to leave me alone because i was learning fine motor control, learning history, (I'd rea the info in the instructions -before instructions went to no info on the model in real life service) and that the painting and other fine detail work would stand me in good stead later in life.

One genre that all my family and their friends like was the fully rigged sailing ships of the battle line that i used build from Airfix or Heller kits. Those people would marvel at all that intricate rigging and wonder how I could ties such tiny knots without breaking something.

I find it very interesting how so many get into model building because they have an interest in one vehicle or aircraft that a relative used in real life.

Cheers from Peter
