Trumpeters 1/200 ..... BB-39_USS Arizona

Greetings all;


..... A few months ago I picked up one of the Trumpeter 1/200 USS Arizona model kits. I started work on
her last week. For the most part I am rather pleased with the model. Like any model that we get, we
would like have seen more detail on the model kit.......... ..... Trumpeter has done a nice job on
this model ...... and it is a good platform to start with. Compared to the 1/350th scale model kit on
the market, She is great. This model is not a up-scaled model. She is a new model, in her on right.....

..... I plan on back dating her to the late 1930's, or 1940s.

The model is 36.1/16in long, and 5.15/16in abreast, (wide). Like Chuckw said, "She is very wide".



..... A few photos from USS Arizonas moderation in 1931. Note: these photos have been released for pubic
use by the United States Navy.

Also of interest, She dos not have gun tubs installed on the upper gun deck yet. She didn't get them
until the 1941 Mod.

At this time She has a 5in/51 forward, on the port, and starboard upper gun deck.

Earlier I was writing about the PE set available for the 1/200 scale
USS Arizona.

..... Lion Roar makes one, like most of there PE sets it is nice, but I found
that they want almost as much, as the model kit cost ......

..... MK1 Design's make a nice one also. What is unusually about there set
is it also comes with a wood deck. I do not care for there wood deck, but
there PE is nice.



.... .... .... .... Note .... on the MK1 wood deck there are no individual
planks, or boards repented. It is one piece of wood .........

....


Over all I liked the White Ensign Models PE set.

.... One of the things that I thought was cool was the PE set comes with two
interiors for the Vought Kingfisher aircraft. This is really nice ....... the insides of the
... 1/200 scale aircraft. This should look really great.


Two Vought Kingfishers come with the model ..... .... ....

Note......... they are clear styrene. so you can see inside of them...... ....

Wish I had one of the big kits, got the 350th scale and the Gold Medal PE set.

Interesting that one of the pics shows the blast bags off the turrent guns.

..... I have that model kit also. From the reviews that I have read,
when Trumpeter bought the molds, and the rights to make the kit, they
did not do any changes to the model. So, this means that the old
problem with the main mast still exist ....... ....

**** Ship builders.... Take note **** Read the reviews before buying
this model kit.

..... Trumpeter also makes an up-grade for the model kit. This has some very useful items in it.
You may want to consider it. The up-grade is very inexpensive..... At spruce Brother's I think
I payed $12.00 dollars US, for it. One of the less expensive items I found ......


PE..... that comes wit the model ....




Next..... real wood decks.

........................................ Real Wood Decks .........................................................................



.... Some of the wood decks have self adhesives on them. The one that I am
using dos not have any glue on it. l like this, it lets me play with the fit, and
find the places, that need work on. Nautilus Models sugest that after
you have played with the deck, and you are satisfied with the fit, you use
3M super 77 glue on the backside of the wood parts.....

..... Then again ....... if you want to paint the deck, it is very detailed, it
should look good. I am not that good at painting ship decks, with the
weathering, it is a task, that I would like to avoid.

they did this during peace time for ventalation.... .... Note: The alignment scopes on the 14in rifle barrells. USS Pennsylvania.

..... Believe it or not, most of the ships with wood decks are very well cept up,
other than the submarine fleet, during the Second World War.

When I was in the US Navy the motto was, "cleanliness is next to Godliness",
the navy has always been a big advocate of keeping the ship, and it's equipment clean.
The Marine Corp, has a smilier doctrine, up until the late 70's the Corp was a devision
of the US Navy. A fiend showed me his pay check, it was signed by
the Secretary of the US Navy......

..... The motto "Ship Shape" also deals with having the ship clean & the equipment clean and in it's proper location.

.... A few stains here and there would be OK, but I would not over do it.....

..... The US Navy has a great way to remove stains from the wood decks. Soap &
Water, and a lot or elbow grease. "O" did I min-chine the pumas scrubbing
brush. This is a broom handle attached to a rectangle piece of lava rock.

I have watched eight or so sailors go up and down the deck, until it was nice
and shiny, and as smooth as a baby's bottom.

..... I have some progress pic to share with you. At this stage the model
seems to be dragging. It seems like I am not getting much done. But,
I plan on lighting the ship, with the two part hull design, the lighting
for the hull area has to be worked out, and install before gluing the
top of the hull to the bottom of the hull. .... .... .


I have drilled out some of the port holes,
but not all of them. This way light will not show through all of them. .... ....

..... I can do this, because at this time period, there is no war. latter,
in 1942 you can not get away with this, the Navy welded covers over the port
holes.


.... Note..... the half moon Casemate areas..... When the ship was launched in 1916
these areas had 5"/51's installed in them. But the navy had not planed for the added
combat weight of the 1930, & 40's. These areas where to close to the water, and they
ended up being a water hazard, the were always wet.... So the Navy enclosed these
areas permanently .... .... .... In this photo, I am trying to get

..... If I am note mistaken you are talking about moving 16in/50 projectiles,
if so, you are correct. In the magazine they were moved with a rope made out of
cotton that was looped around the projectile then looped around a capstan.

..... In the diagram the discussion is 14in rounds, not 16in. the 16in round weighted
1000 pounds, or so, more than the 14in rounds. the 14in projectiles where hosted
upside down and and put into the projectile hoist to be sent to the gun turret..... :v
