The Moose-1/8 Weta sci-fi kit -updated 9th Feb

The Moose - modified 1/8 Weta Workshop kit -EXEMPT

Well I didn't get to finish this in time but I am working again on it.

Could I ask someone in admin to transfer it to my Masters section please ;)

Ian.

The Moose - modified 1/8 Weta Workshop kit -EXEMPT

Back again with some progress(gotta luv Xmas holidays).
This kit is certainly designed for the experienced modeler mainly because of the instructional setup.
I found that I needed to mark up the parts in the foam carrier, as well as on the parts themselves(where possible), as they do not have any markings and you are required to find them from a series of sub assembly photos in the instructions. To add to this the parts sitting in the foam carriers are not always in the same positions as they are photographed in the instructions, which makes for a bit of a 'treasure hunt' that I don't want to have to do while i am in the thick of building the model - it kind of breaks up the rhythm for me.
So this is what I ended up spending a few hours fixing... ;)

The bagged parts will just have to be found......such is the nature of garage kits.
On a positive note, the resin is very workable and semi-soft, which I think is achieved through a high content of powder filler like talc (which I have used myself in the past) which reduces the hardness of the resin.

See you again soon with some construction stuff.

You know this could have been a lot more complicated looking at all those joints on the arms.

I hear you MP, but it would have been nice to set the arms in custom positions.

STAY TUNED......and thanks for the quick Admin on the post move :good:

The Moose - 1/8 Weta Workshop sci-fi kit

The first sub assembly that I am working on is the main hull/ head.
This has a large top piece, small front, angled side pieces that are handed and a multi angled lower hull panel. These all slot in with wide pins that fit into rectangular holes but as with all 'Garage Resin kits the fit is not always right and the pieces are slightly off.

20200102_202130.jpg

Each piece has a large key or two that needs to be removed but this is quite easy as they are thin and long and the resin is quite easy to work with being quite soft (high powder content). :)
20200102_201946.jpg

Where the keys were removed there was a moderate amount of sanding required keeping note of what surfaces mated where..

This stage needed a lot of test fitting then filing, then refitting and more filing etc...
The rectangular pins were wider in some cases and the lower hull panel had to be fitted before the final side went on. The instructions don't show any of this and you can only find out through test fitting. I imagine each kit will be slightly different.
There are small gaps that will need filler and a further rear section and small details that still need to be fitted.
Here is the head piece before super gluing.
20200102_201241.jpg

Once the head is secured with super glue a large rear base needs to be attached but the fit underneath is not lining up with the detail because one side of the rear rectangle is slightly wider than the other.
More filing needed..... :smack

See you again soon.

A lesson in patience and persevere, no doubt. (y)

It's not just a model. It's an Adventure!
Too Cool! :ro:

The Moose - 1/8 Weta Workshop sci-fi kit

well things have proceeded a little further and the head is looking rather big and mean!
A bucket load of filing and sanding has been done but I am still going - recomendation for this kit is TEST FIT, TEST FIT, TEST FIT everything a number of times. :hmmm
As you will see in the photos I have a lot more work to do on fixing gaps and stepped-up surfaces as well as reworking detal that will probably have to be sanded off. The lower head and the mid section panels at the back needed to be realigned by shaving sides and cutting off locating lugs. It seems the hole section had slightly moved in the mould, hover the detail is fine.
Thats what advanced modeling is all about isn't it - we tend to get spoilt by the injection kits of today but this large resin project brings back memories from the 90's of some of those early and even mid production resin monsters that the Chinese companies took over and now produce in plastic ending the 'resin run'.

I attached the rear assembly that will mount the rear extension shown as parts in the previous pictures. The bottom half of this assembly is part MH2_07 which does not get a mention on the instruction sheet so was another 'treasure hunt'. I ended up identifying it through modellers intuition and by the side panels appearing in the photographs.

Attaching the parts - this still requires plenty of cleanup which I will do on mass before attaching the details and the sub assemblies

The Sides of the bottom cradle and the rear exstension. The main assemblies are glued but I still have more sanding/filing and filling to do before the fit is acceptable for the rear exstension.

The Moose-1/8 Weta sci-fi kit -updated 7th Jan

This update is only for the main body as it has taken a lot of filling and sanding etc. to get the rear assembly to engage and fit into the front section. I have added a lot of modelling paste as well as plastic strip to fill in all the gaps around the head and my file got a ton of use on the rear section parts. I added some strip plastic to the lower joins to give it a different look between the panels.
I found the rear pins actually detrimental to the fit of the rear assembly so I took them both off.
I got a number of hobby chisels on my trips to Japan and they were just what I needed for modifying the resin components. (y)
I have started adding the detail where i had to sand it off and I will also add additional stuff as I am not building this as a strict Moose from the film but rather using the base model to go a little further in a different world and scenario.

Wow Ian!

I've never got into the sci-fi thing, but that is really impressive! And being resin, I can imagine it was expensive as well! I really want to see this when you get it finished! I;m impressed!
