Tamiya T-62

Well-known member
Well hello ‘dere!

OK-OK-OK…So who da’ heck is me? An intenerant member..that’s who!!!

Ok so I started this T-62 for a GB and had to pull out of it, as I found myself pulling massive hours at work, and working on the house too. Hours are have slowed slightly and the house looks like crap….Time to do some modelin’!

The tank to be done is the older Tamiya kit in 1/35. As the turret is known to be poorly shaped, I at the time also bought an AEF Designs update kit…but when I upacked it months later, the turret was gorgeous..but the rest of the parts and the gun barrel were crap! The barrel was badly warped and had pits bigger than a teenagers’ face a week before prom! I therefore used the Tamiya parts, and a Barrel-Store aluminum barrel, which only required minor fitting. BUT, when I unpack the T-62 I had been working on, only to find that some of the grab handles were broked (yes Laura, and Jenny, it is too a word…in the S.East US, anyhow.)!

I take alook around, the two most likely culprits were nearby:

Oh well, it actually worked out as a happy accident of sorts, as I used a wire that I had to make new handles, and the bends in the course of forming them really only add to the panache:

Well, it charitable at best to say that I am pitifully slow. Now that I have done a bit of this, I think I will look at getting the external fuel lines complete, and hope fuly I can git-r-done at least as far as priming goes. I ultimately want it to look like the Syrian tanks with their 3-panel camo as in the Zaloga books….wish me luck!

Thanks! That little hand drill is from none other than Moon Pup, AKA - "THE PUP"

I have been really struggling with the external fuel lines - what a chore! Who the heck puts exterior fuel lines on a tank, anyway? I am not entirely sure that I still have all the parts related to thhe headlights and all but I have another donor model that I think I can steal from to complete.

I hope over the weekend and into next week I can have it ready for primer. I have a book on Arab-Israeli tank wars by Zaloga that shows this basic camo, but with some gray mixed in:

OK, here is the latest. I got it to the basic priming as you can see.

Here is one side of it:

Really, I like to build in subassemblies, so in these pics the model is just sort of sitting together

Here are the wheels and lower hull assy:

In this pic I tried to show how I took Zap-A-Gap and “painted” the hull and a touch of the turret prior to priming to get it that ‘cast’ look and get away from Tamiya’s shiny-smooth hull. You can see a bit of the external gas lines and exterior lighting cables too.

So, that is where she sits today. I have some other assembly to do yet, but it is rolling along not too bad, you think?

I do not have nearly the skills I see here in other artists/modelers, so any help appreciated!

Here’s a few more of the ‘other’ side of the tank, plus a pair of overhead views:

It's good to see you're making progress, Bruce! Have you decided on a color scheme yet?(y)

Zaloga had a book a few years ago roughly titles Arab Israeli Wars, and in it was a Syrian T-62 that was green with yellow and gray splotches on it - that is what I want to do it in.

No, I'm sure the cats are innocent. They would "never" do something to a model on your desk. Well, at least that is what my cats tell me...haha

On a serious note, everything is looking good. If you can find it, the Sabinga Marting book on Arab T-62's has some very good pictures of Syrian camouflage schemes.

Nice tank ... please, paint it soon!

And be very very carefully when painting with all those pretty kittnes near! ... sometimes cat hair and airbrush are incompatible!

Hi iambrb,

I'm more of a WW II guy, but those T-62 are great looking armour!

They have a certain slick and mean look about them... Very good choice you made!

And what about those "exterior fuel lines": strange thing, eh? I mean, you'd think that a fuel line is something to be very well protected, so how come they're on the outside of the tank?!?

The Syrian camo scheme is cool, IMO, and I guess many of us here are anxious to see your T-62 painted! ;)

Cheers and good luck with your build! :)

I am in no hurry my -man, fear not!

Curious though, so excuse me and not to be rude, but again, is this too green?

The color will be less intense when you start the weathering, so probably not too green.

You should have brought your camera and we'd work picture taking also. you're still going to need another coat or so, remember light coats. And I still don't think it's too green.

:hmmm green looks ok to me. As mentioned it will tone down with the weathering. You could also lighten the green if it bothers you too much. I normally go lighter then darken with filters and washes.
Anyhow it's nice to see some paint on it. :ro:

I terribly torn, I have a some time as I likely not be able to get too much done on it during the week.

I will have to post pics of the MG, I have it going and it looks pretty good, just need to weather it a bit (not too much - want it to match the tank afterall!).
