Tamiya Matilda - Finished.

Tamiya Matilda in 1/35 scale.

One of my “resolution to get it done” builds.
Like a lot of others, I rushed to purchase this one when it came out. I started it some time ago and then lost steam. Well it’s back and I’m pleased so far. I used a bit of 1/64 music wire on this one. Fuel tank handles, lamp protection rods (on the fenders) antennae, and mirror mount (I always break off the plastic ones, or lose them if I paint them off the vehicle). I think that I will paint the figures first. I find them the difficult and a hurdle at the end, so I’ll get ‘em out of the way now (...well,soon… hopefully).

Trying to sort out those Caunter color schemes,

Bill

Re: Tamiya Matilda

I really want a few of those. One to do as your, one to convert to a mine sweeper and one to backdate. Looking really good Bill (y) (y) (y)

Re: Tamiya Matilda

Some progress.

The crew got some primer and some Vallejo 876 (brown sand) as a flesh base coat.
The hull got a basecoat of Tamiya XF-59 (desert yellow) and a first camo coat of XF-21 (Sky). I’ll let it cure up for a day or two, and then mask and spray camo color two (wait and see), and touch up.
The side armor was left off so that I could get to the underside to apply the camo. Same with the tools and the stowage.
I'm really glad that I replaced the mirror support with music wire. With all the handling and masking, it was "twanging" every couple of minutes. It would have snapped off several times if I hadn't. "Whew" (I may break it off yet.)
Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Bill

Re: Tamiya Matilda

Looks like a nice kit and always interesting to see one being built. I have a Valentine somewhere. :cheer: We just had a 2 part 2 hour program over here (England)called Tankies about the 5th Royal armour Div in North Africa and how the British tanks in general were death traps. Vertical armour faces, small guns and imposable to get out in a hurry with very small hatches. Even when we got the Firefly with its 17lb anti tank gun we had to team 4 Cromwell's with each firefly so the firefly could protect them !!!Great program, hopefully you might get it over there,

Looks very nice. Really coming together. (y) (y) (y)

As an aside I read the Germans trained on egress with a standard of something like 60 seconds being good. The Allies didnt really train and even getting out of a captured Panzer IV it took almost 5 minutes. Interesting stuff.

I remember reading in one of my books about the Canadian Armour Corps that the Germans would target the Firefly first and then go after the lesser gunned tanks. Did they do that with the Firefly attached to the Cromwell?

OP. I'd like to build another Matilda (I have built the original Tamiya Matilda as a tank Canadians were training on in England)but this time as n Australian tank. I'd name it Waltzing Matilda.

Which Tamiya kit is yours?

Cheers

It was said that the tigers beat a hasty retreat if there was a firefly about as its 17lb gun would go straight through a tiger. In North Africa they stood a chance because they could target the Cromwell's while well out of range of return fire but once the 8th Army moved to the D day landings and ranges were often less than 100yds, sometimes just the other side of a hedge in France!! then the Tiger was a sitting duck to firefly's.

first episode is repeated tomorrow on BBC so will appear on line on their i-player the next day

Re: Tamiya Matilda

Thanks for the heads-up on the tank program, Paddy. Havn't seen it here yet, but I will be searching.

Thanks Bob, Mike, James , and Terry!

Tank builder, the kit is the 1/35 scale Kit no.#35300.

Some more progress.

Camo color three. XF-13 (J.A. Green)
I tack glued the engine covers on so that I could “pop” them off and re-mask and re-shoot if required. Same with the main gun and mantlet. I find it difficult to push strips of tape into all the crevices and keep it straight at the same time. As you go around compound curves (or across curved surfaces at an angle), the tape wants to change direction, or it puckers. So, what ever I can paint or touch up I will.

Thanks for looking,

Bill

Re: Tamiya Matilda

Super work Bill! Outstanding scheme :notworthy

Ah, so it's the seconf Tamiya offering of the Matilda. Mine is the first release of the Matilda. At $65.00 I want to see a lot of improvement between those two releases.

Hey Moompupy, did you know that the icon you used in your post translate in a text notification as "notworthy"? Shouldn't that be Noteworthy?

I like these British camouflage patterns.

Cheers

this is the origin of the Not Worthy Emoticon

As in
Super work Bill! Outstanding scheme :notworthy to take out your garbage...:mpup

Re: Tamiya Matilda

Okay. I thought the notworthy (all one word in the email notifications) was an errr in spelling.

I like the way this Matilda is shaping up.

Cheers

Re: Tamiya Matilda
