1971 Tamiya blast from the past

I never thought trying to wind up a buisiness and call it a day would involve more work than trying to start a business :)
When you find you have accumulated 20 years of invoices and orders and the only safe way to dispose of them is through a shredder that over heats and stops after half a dozen pages.............. it takes days :)

anyway this is where we are now

I took all my stuff to local shredder event. They have them every now and then around here. Church groups generally sponsor them. 700 computers sold over the 7 years I was in business. No I didn't hurt HP or Dell. Packard Bell maybe.

Looks sweet Paddy!

Those of you who follow my builds in all subjects will know my disdain for aftermarket rubbish. :)

This is Tamiyas 1/6 detail up chain aimed at their 1/6 motorcycle range.

After many hours

of trimming and cleaning up and assembly i had a chain.

Problem is its the wrong pitch for their own 1/6 models........
I recon its about 1 link in 7 to short in pitch......

Fortunately i didnt buy it especially and it was left over from an earlier Italia fiat car build

Italari fiat Mefiistofele (7).JPG

Looks like its made for one model only, likely the Africa Twin, they just dont bother to tell you that on the packet...but then being Tamiya, they dont tell you its works really well on the Italeri Fiat either 🤣

We have a problem houston...

Got most of the paint done however the Decals in this kit are toast. No idea how many decades old they are but they are rigid and will not take any curve even after a soak in Microsol.
So, looks like i have to paint some lines and things to break up the expanse of red. i have a few Logo type decals but nothing really 1/6 scale.

Its funny Bob, i have little enthusiasm for this build. I cant tell you why but suddenly i need to think of a paint scheme and print some home made decals and i am getting my enthusiasm back. I think what it is i like to think, "how can i do that" or "can i pull this off" and suddenly it get interesting again. its occupying the brain and not just the hands :)

That is exactly what draws me to a build in many cases. It isn't the subject usually, it is the challenge to build parts of it.

Yep, I enjoy the challenge as well, but that's what draws us to your builds, Paddy, you always seem to pull em thru!

So, I'll be a smart alec and say, "Piece a cake, right?" Ruck On, Paddy, you go this.

Ahh that didnt work :)

I repainted the fairing silver from Red

I then masked off the honda logo design and sprayed it yellow.

the problem is that the paint is drawn to the edges of the masking tape by, i suspect, surface tension. this means you get a thin coat which is idea with a heavy edge which isnt..

not happy with this so i stripped the surface back smooth

_DSC1582.JPG

so i made a template and cut the design out of some yellow decal paper i had

the problem here is the paper flakes where you cut it, its ok on straight lines but it wont take a curve.

It also dried with a mottled colour

so basically that didnt work either so thinking cap back on ??

You've already figured out the original yellow stripe paint was a little thick. Remember the clear coating the masking trick we discussed earlier? Also, you aren't "rushing the chemicals" are you?

I was using a Tamiya rattle can for the Yellow which sort of squirts paint as much as sprays :) I will mask it off and try again with an air brush and some MRP yellow which is really thin but drys instantly so wont pool next to the masking tape., might need a lot of coats though as its almost a transparent yellow..
