I usually make a jig and pre-cut all the track pins so the cut end will not be visible when inserted into place.

That sounds like a good plan.

One other detail. the StuGs from S.288 had a special air cleaner, similar to those on the PzIV H mounted above each engine air intake.

I've got a copy of that build article from the Osprey book. Lots of unique details on these StuG's, the air cleanser, spare torsion bars on the hull over the road wheels, Jerry can rack, spare wheel mounts. Have to re-read it before I get to deep into the build again.
