Splinter Camo Fallschirmjager Smock, (RESTARTED)

ausf

Master at Arms
Being I have what amounts to zero experience figure painting, I guess this makes sense. :blink

I'm no stranger to painting, but I've put off figures long enough. I have experence with portrait work, hopefully I can apply some of that in this field. I'm more a sculptor at heart, but learning to paint figs can only help.

I bought this Jeff Shui figure a while back mainly to see how he casted it (always interested in other approaches), so it's a good objet to test some techniques.

Please let me know if there's anything you see I should do or try. I assembled with Aves (I know it's easier to paint in pieces) and primed with Vallejo grey poly. Then I gave the smock a coat of Panzer Aces Splinter base and spent some time with an X-atco and Tamiya tape. :gogo

My plan is to spray the spinter pattern through a PE mask, then give it a coat of Future before painting the gear, etc.

Thanks for looking.

That looks great Ausf!

I've got a couple of Jeff Shui figures to paint myself, never would have thought of masking
them like that.

Do you mean you are going to spray the vertical rain marks through a mask?

Thanks guys.

Yep Tom, I grabbed some unused PE from the box (this was something on a 1/35 T-34) that was slotted and surrounded it with tape, then shot through it.

Okay, I'm restarting this in an attempt to clear a cluttered bench.

I did some base work, messing around with micro balloons. I was going for the early fall snow/morning frost type coverage.

Can't let Luiz have all the fun. ;)

Seriously, his astonishing Zelt has me inspired. :notworthy

Thanks guys.

Dave, it's a FG42. The barrel isn't connected on the recent photos (I hope I have it intact somewhere).

Very nice work!!

If I might make a suggestion, and please don't take this as criticism, very far from it, just an observation . The pattern wouldn't continue unbroken across areas such as sewn on pockets, and across the main seam down the front where it buttons up.

I've been doing a lot of research on how to paint the US Army "Chocolate Chip" uniforms, and I've noticed that even if a sewn on pocket might have the same repeated pattern as the area around it on the main uniform, the pattern still never lines up exactly the same, and unless you get incredibly lucky and the pattern repeats in just the right interval, you'll always have some kind of mismatch across the seam where the 2 halves button or zip down the front.

On that note, the paint work came out excellent, I really like it a lot!
