Ships

Thinking ahead i have never built a battleship..or any ship come to that. where can i read up on techniques and decking etc, also i see tamiya ships are £50 or £150.... for 1/300/350 what's the difference ? PE ?

any pointers would useful :)

Age of the kit has a lot to do w/ it. The original release Yamato goes for about $80-100 US, but the new Yamato that came out goes for well over $200 US.

And then some can have extra goodies in them too that can affect the price.

Paddy one of the best sites to start out on would be www.steelnavy.com also www.modelwarships.com is good as well. As far as kits go it really depends on what you are wanting to build. U-Boats are always a great place to start since they tend to have fewer parts which means you can spend more on aftermarket goodies lol. I didn't even realize that Tamiya did ships in 1/300 scale.

Paddy, just don't start with anything with Sails... the rigging it's a big challenge.

I wish to see you build a U.S.S. Missouri!!! from Tamiya, for sure will be fantastic!!!! :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

One thing I would suggest is to avoid the veneer decking. Paint the wood deck with any number of methods out there, IMHO it would look more realistic.

The more i look into this the stranger it gets...

This is the Bismark. The bore of the gun barrels would be 15" i think. That would make the deck planks about 25-30" here. I think deck planks would be about 10" or 250mm. so at 1/350 scale we would be looking at about 0.75mm. the problem is once you start doing that you can scale down planks but not the lines between them between, they stay real so a real life gap of 1mm should become about.1/350 of a mm or 7 microns :)..I think i got that right) so would you see planks at 1/350 ?? not with the naked eye at a viewing of 20" i doubt.
Is their any point in going for high detail if the detail is not correct from the start ?

Also notice how the thickness of the veneer almost covers the hatch just aft of the rear turret. Also the veneer rises above the edge of the hull. Really, I wish I had not used it on the Graf Spee but I'm so far along I can't undo it.
