Scrap Metal Vignette

Hi all--

Here's something I worked on while waiting for my Matilda to dry. I had a window of free time, sun, and a co-operative computer last Saturday and it all came together and now I'll share it with you guys.

Scrap Metal is a 1:1 scale sculpture by Monroe Perdu. I look at it as a sort of poignant, after the battle scene or possibly something related to battlefield archaeology, a particular interest of mine. At the very least, it is a great painting exercise that you could do several things with in terms of metal finishes, patina, groundwork, etc. Check it out at their website if you can. www.monroeperdu.com But of course, few modellers can leave well-enough alone and one day it struck me that it would make a great base for a 90 or 120 mm figure, maybe even something larger or perhaps even a vignette base. If you have a set of figures that aren't intended for another diorama but they're just too cool to let sit in the box, I really recommend something like this to get them out and about.

These are Dragon's newish Monte Casino figures, right out of the box except I fussed with the ears a bit and added the straps. There are some Gen 2 weapons and equipment sprues in there but the ears were just too flat and feature-less for me. A little drilling and cutting into the head behind what ear was there took care of that. They're painted with some Tamiya, Vallejo and Model Master acrylics with some pastels that tied them into the dirt colors on the Scrap Metal base that had been painted far before this idea came to me. I did NOT attempt the camo on the para jackets. Remember, I was also painting a Caunter scheme at the same time and maybe that will get your sympathy up for my laziness.

I hope you all have a great Christmas or whatever you celebrate this time of year and that 2010 brings you all the modelling excitement you can stand.
