russian sherman...finished

russian sherman...primer and paint

part 1

not exactly a step by step but this is the process of painting that i am trying to work on.

my first step is to spray flat black over the build. this is rustoleum flat black.

the second step of this process is the base coat. for this i used an olive drab from model master. not sure i like the color but it will work for the intended circumstance. to me this is a bit grayer of a tint that i was really looking for.

when i sprayed i tried to cover the interior of each "panel" but i tried to keep away from the edges to keep the shadow integrity.

now the second part will show the third layer....

part 2

the third layer is the base coat lightened with a lighter color, white, tan, buff, etc. you add drop by drop until you are satisfied with the lightened color. for me i turned to my consistant, rustoleum flat white.

now when i sprayed it i tried to stay in the center of the "panel". i want to keep the shadow and i want to keep further interior to provide more of a faded look.

and with a bit of a different light source.

now normally i would do a couple of more layers to give it a definite faded look but with the gray tint this looks pretty faded already. i will let this go for a couple of days because i want the paint to cure completely and then i will hit it with future to ready it for decals and then further on, weathering.

i really wish i could get the pictures to do it justice. although i was careful with lighting and how i took the pics they just dont give the right feel for how this looks.

Joe.

The effects look great. Well done. :good: I have tried the faded look before but never looked right. Maybe because I use acrylics.

Testors green drab is an OK version for olive drab. It is a bit darker than Tamiya OD.

many thanks for looking in all.

i have seen others use acrylics to get the faded effect, i am more than a little supprised that it worked for me to be honest.

the biggest issue is with silvering. seems it just doesnt want to lie down and play nice.

they have been hit again with decal solvent after using a blade to slice the decal in a few places. we shall see tomorow how they are holding up. i hope they play nice so i can get a gloss on and start on the weathering process.

Joe.
It seems the decals from Academy are the worst to blend in. My method for decals is the following.

I brush on whatever I am using for gloss onto the area where the decals go on. Apply the decals, then a day or two later,I airbrush gloss onto the entire model.
