Ref...Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

So I can paint the Bismarck any color I want, as long as it is gray :D

no!

Bismarck changed camo several times and how you paint Bismarck is dependent on what timeframe you choose to depict ...

there's a discussion going on about the turret tops - rumors go that in the final days Bismarck had yellow tops on main and secondary gun turrets and some say that the tops were painted red - that is unlikely since red turret tops were normally used on trials and fleet maneuvres only ... the turret top colors - yellow, red or grey - are the only open questions existing on paint schemes nowadays ...

there are some very well researched paint schemes displayed here:

Bismarck paint schemes introduction

1940

1941

1941 - Rheinübung

the armament layout of Bismarck is also of quite some significance on what paint scheme you want to use:

same goes for Tirpitz:

1941

1942

1943

1944

i cannot recommend the page listed above enough - the makers of that page have dedicated years of research into german capital ships of ww2 and are absolute specialists on the topic ...

Mike, a cpl years back someone traded me a Century 21 1/32 Me-109 that I had won in a contest raffle for Minihobby Models 1/350 Bismarck. I know it isn't the best kit out there but then it makes a cheap practice project. Does anyone have a link to a German WW2 navy color chart?

Does anyone have a link to a German WW2 navy color chart?

Joe, there is a web site offering color chips and some companies offer the colors in their paint lines. Click on the color chip images to go to the Snyder & Short Enterprises web site.
