If a tape will remove the sand then MASKOL will do that too. Cutting paper masks moist those a little with water or thin lead foil could do the trick - this is what came to my mind

Post it notes are a very low tack. They might work. Tamiya tape is low tack also. If the tape pulls too much try taping it to a clean surface a few times and pulling up. This will also decrease the tackiness of the tape.

You could try using a mask made from a manilla (file) folder, low air pressure and a low angle with the airbrush. Shooting across the edge of the folder produces a pretty sharp edge and you can cut the file to the shape you want.

Re:Masking - help please

Hiya Guenther.

Sorry I missed this. So I hope it's not to late to offer one more suggestion.

First I assume that you are talking about masking a vehicle that has a "sanded" or non slip surface. If this is what you are working with, my suggestion is to give it one or two layers of future floor wax, or similar product to seal in the sand surface. That should do a pretty good job of sealing and making the sand very solidly attatched to the vehicle. Then you should be able to mask all you want with the material of your choice without pulling any (or at least very little) of the sand off. But of course you should practice once or twice on an old junker just so you get a good feel for how it works.

But if you are talking about ground work, then the floor wax should also do a good job with that to cement it in place. Then you can paint it or what ever with a brush without any problem.

Then when you are done, just give it the flat agent of your choice.

If you are able to get hold of some I would recommend Parafilm M. It's like laboratory cling film that will do just that...cling to your model without sticking to it.It's quite thin but rubbery so will conform to most shapes and can be cut.
I have a box ...somewhere..courtesy of the local path lab here. Have been looking for it to use myself so I wouldn't hold my breath..but if I do find it I will pm you and you can decide if you want some.
