Places and Planes - Photos from Romania

White_Wolf

Master at Arms
Ladies and Gentlemen, you will have to excuse the sense of national pride that I am experiencing at the moment, but I thought maybe someone here would find some joy looking at these photos. Places and planes for your viewing pleasure:

The Bran Castle - also known as the Dracula Castle.

Monument built to celebrate the heroes of WW 1. Built at 2291 m altitude, it is 28 m tall and visible from a very long distance. Lights up at night. See below.

One of the most beautiful castles - the Peles Castle. Used to belong to the Royal Family. And another pic, showing the Room of Weapons.

One day I will try build a diorama - good luck to me :blink :woohoo: :silly:

These are the remains of a place that used to be the capital of the Roman province of Dacia. Conquered by the Roman Empire in 106 A.D.

h9eabd92.JPG

A natural formation up in the mountains called the SFINX. The whole site is called "Sfinxul si babele" the Sphynx and the old hags - :D not very polite but accurate translation I hope.

1488 A.D. monastery. What makes it unique is the blue paint on the walls. Original recipe long lost, but not a bad one if you think it's over 500 years old.

And now for the planes

IAR 99 Soim (Hawk) - not built at the original IAR factory (where the IAR 80 was produced).

A rare photo of an IAR 80 shooting down a P 38 during an American raid over Bucharest. June the 10th 1944.

Enjoy and thanks for looking.

Laurence, thanks for posting. At a time when everyone was building German aircraft, I spent my time with the Axis Allies (buying books, magazines, and so on). I recall a discussion about this particular photograph being made for illustrative purposes and not taken. Something about the lack of reflection from the fire on the tail boom. I am trying to find it.

Excellent post!

Regards,

I think it would be nearly impossible to get a actual photo of a shoot down like this. Gun camera angle sure, we've seen hundreds. This looks more like a Flight Sim screenshot that's been photoshopped. Just my humble opinion.

That may very well be, no idea MP. If it is a fake, apologies, had no idea. I could find was some recounts of the attack mentioning dog fights as low as 300ft.

Thanks everyone for looking :notworthy

Great photos. Being an Archaeologist the photo of the Dacia capital ruins are fascinating to me.

Thank you, happy to help. If you come across pages in Romanian, can help with the translation. I have visited some sites myself years ago. The ruins of a Roman Castrum can be found 10 minutes drive from where I used to live.

Regards,

What looks weird to me is the angle of the smoke, it's not flowing in the direction of flight unless the plane was starting to pull up, but there's no indication on the flight surfaces.

Photos are beautiful.

No apologies needed other than us hijacking your thread. I think it's a fair representation of actual events, like our models are fair representations of actual vehicles (some more than others :drinks )

There's several things in that photo that makes me question if it's real or not but it doesn't matter.

We always enjoy seeing photos from our members homes so post away! :good:

No hijacking whatsoever - everything is open to comments and opinions here. For what's worth, having a second look and thought, that photo looks ...ummm....somehow a bit too perfect :hmmm

The undeniable thing is that the two planes really existed, the 10th of June was an awfully bloody day where many young lives were lost.

I think that whatever we do as modellers is to reproduce part of history, celebrate and honor all those who answered the call of duty without ever forgetting the abomination of war.

Laurence, remember that I mention it was made (not taken) to document an actual event. As such, no apologies needed. I think of the photo like well done artwork by those who would know.
(y)

Part of the Romanian landscape seems to have been forgotten (unless you were traveling with the Mrs or Mrs-to-be)...

Chukw may not ask for any but could you provide some inspiration for Marina's outfits?

OH forgot to mention, yes, have read many a story about dog fights on the ground. In fact we had news this week that Lt. William Overstreet Jr.passed away at 92 years old, his claim to fame? He flew under the Eiffel Tower in hot pursuit of a German fighter.

Photos are beautiful.

Notice the dead right engine? Perhaps the airplane is on the verge of stalling?

Cheers

Spot on - the right engine seems to be dead indeed.

Found two more photos, published by Harry Stine who worked with Coanda between 1961-1965 (or something) at Stamford.

Ah, this is a beautiful place, I confirm that! :)

For me that was a bit of surprise to find that castle - while in Romania, I went there one weekend just to see mountains.

Aand... Bucharest has a great aviation museum as well. ;)
