Most of the lower hull is inspired by Tamiya with Dragon style sponsons already in place.
The engine is the gasoline version and it fits perfectly in the Tamiya kit. The tracks, which will be released separately as a set labeled Starr tracks (I already informed Trumpeter's US distributor that it should be labeled Jagdpanzer 38 late tracks) are fitted to a new drive sprocket and idler. Trumpeter did not use the ones from their Waffenträger kits.
The upper hull is nicely done for the diesel version but the mantlet and gun sleeve are VERY smooth so cast effects must be added. The gun tube and sleeve are very awkward with a butt fit without any recess for the barrel. This means that replacing with an aftermarket barrel requires drilling.
The roadwheels are incorrect, even if one removes every other bolt. The late wheels used rivets and the outer collar is much narrower than provided. The Trumpeter road wheels are copies of the Tamiya kit wheels which are early types with the deeper collar needed to reach the Pz 38 (t) armor disc wheels used at the beginning of the Jagdpanzer 38 production.
The yellower tan road wheel at the left is Tamiya, compare the outer collar (with the bolts which Trumpeter asks that an alternating one be removed) to the outer collar on the gray Dragon item...
The rear of the Dragon wheels have no detail other than three knock out pin marks. Ft. Duquesne offered a set of late wheels but these had the postwar welds added for longevity on exported vehicles.
SKP Models offer a late conversion for the Tamiya kit with the wheels:
as well as a set of worn out wheels:
I do not know if they provide detail on the inner sides. Keep in mind that the Starr prototype had wider mudguards all around so their aren't any PE replacements yet. Rub lead sheet over them to make your own.
If you want to make one of the production Starr vehicles, you need to combine kits. The glacis could be removed from the Trumpeter kit and grafted to the Tamiya but one still must address the roadwheels, late features (like the exhaust) and use the Trumpeter tracks since the Tamiya tracks are the earlier one. While the Trumpeter kit includes the correct idlers for the prototype, the others seem to have the six hole idlers. SKP Models offer them separately. Last, add lifting eyes (looks like an inverted U) to both the mantlet and barrel sleeve.
All the above is from a forthcoming review.
