Regards,

The parts are beautifully molded and I was happy to see that Trumpeter did some excellent engineering... almost Tamiya like!

That thought made me pull out my Tamiya Jagdpanzer 38 and compare the parts. Trumpeter was 'HEAVILY INSPIRED' by Tamiya.

While the Trumpeter parts are modified a bit, I was able to put the Tamiya parts on the Trumpeter kit and they locked in place! How bad is it? I got confused with the hulls and almost put the wrong one in the box!

Tamiya doesn't make the Starr version... the Trumpeter parts are almost as nice as the Tamiya ones so it isn't worth buying the Trumpeter kit to convert the Tamiya.

There are four subjects which I want to finish based on the Jagdpanzer 38:

Chwat - the early one captured and used by the Polish Home Army
Baby Elefant - a mid to late model with an elephant marking on the topfblende
Flammpanzer 38 - bought a Dragon Sd.Kfz. 251/16 to use the pump as I want to add an interior, it is a heavy conversion.
Jagdpanzer 38 Starr diesel prototype - I was prepared to buy a conversion but this came along.
Jagdpanzer 38 Starr production - also used in Czech Uprising

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the kit but I wish they would stop getting heavily inspired to the point they copy errors. In this case, no errors but the engine they include is better put to use inside the Tamiya kit (it fits) as the Starr diesel prototype, which this represents, had a different engine. Also the wheels are not of the final type used on the diesel prototype.

Regards,

Most of the lower hull is inspired by Tamiya with Dragon style sponsons already in place.

The engine is the gasoline version and it fits perfectly in the Tamiya kit. The tracks, which will be released separately as a set labeled Starr tracks (I already informed Trumpeter's US distributor that it should be labeled Jagdpanzer 38 late tracks) are fitted to a new drive sprocket and idler. Trumpeter did not use the ones from their Waffenträger kits.

The upper hull is nicely done for the diesel version but the mantlet and gun sleeve are VERY smooth so cast effects must be added. The gun tube and sleeve are very awkward with a butt fit without any recess for the barrel. This means that replacing with an aftermarket barrel requires drilling.

The roadwheels are incorrect, even if one removes every other bolt. The late wheels used rivets and the outer collar is much narrower than provided. The Trumpeter road wheels are copies of the Tamiya kit wheels which are early types with the deeper collar needed to reach the Pz 38 (t) armor disc wheels used at the beginning of the Jagdpanzer 38 production.

The yellower tan road wheel at the left is Tamiya, compare the outer collar (with the bolts which Trumpeter asks that an alternating one be removed) to the outer collar on the gray Dragon item...

The rear of the Dragon wheels have no detail other than three knock out pin marks. Ft. Duquesne offered a set of late wheels but these had the postwar welds added for longevity on exported vehicles.

SKP Models offer a late conversion for the Tamiya kit with the wheels:

as well as a set of worn out wheels:

I do not know if they provide detail on the inner sides. Keep in mind that the Starr prototype had wider mudguards all around so their aren't any PE replacements yet. Rub lead sheet over them to make your own.

If you want to make one of the production Starr vehicles, you need to combine kits. The glacis could be removed from the Trumpeter kit and grafted to the Tamiya but one still must address the roadwheels, late features (like the exhaust) and use the Trumpeter tracks since the Tamiya tracks are the earlier one. While the Trumpeter kit includes the correct idlers for the prototype, the others seem to have the six hole idlers. SKP Models offer them separately. Last, add lifting eyes (looks like an inverted U) to both the mantlet and barrel sleeve.

All the above is from a forthcoming review.

Regards,

I neglected to mention that, over at Planet Armor, Dan (Panamadan) informed me that the Eduard Jagdpanzer 38 pieces fit the Tamiya kit (it is what he used to convert the Tamiya kit to a late version) so they may be used on this kit as well.
