Do both and practice chipping. There are examples of DAK vehicles blotches/lines over the gray. i tried gray with heavy dusting here:
It did not turn out too good. This is the older Tamiya kit that is about $20. About colors, I read a GI account where he wondered why the Germans were issued white caps. Colors faded very quickly in the desert.

DAK Panzer IV
Here is my Tamiya Panzer IV done in Africa Korps. This is the old motorized model. I built this to experiment with dust weathering. I am not done (hatches, etc.) and not sure where to go next. The last time I posted was Oct f last year. I will never finish a campaign in time. Comments...

This one is close to finished. I might add some canteens and other odds and ends. Tamiya is Tamiya, but they have really upped their game with figures. This model came with a crew and I will adding them in the future. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also tried some things with my iPhone. Are the pictures looking better? I am using lossless compression so any improvement will have to come from the iPhone.

Factory interior on Begleitwagen was red oxide primer, RAL 3009 Rot, on the floor and rising up the sides about halfway, then RAL 1001 Elfenbein (Ivory) from there up. All hatch interiors, seen from the outside, are the exterior color(s).
